The entire point of the “fediverse” is to combat the network effect. Don’t like Lemmy? Move to another app and still communicate with people on Lemmy. Plus it’s all open, can’t find an app you like? Build one or wait for someone to build one you like.

I think it’s because people are less polarised than in the US (despite the media’s best efforts). Most people fall somewhere near the centre and so the conservative leadership is somewhat scared of its MPs dragging it further to the right.

I will add that the Tories are in a bit of a shambles at the minute and so they will swing randomly between centre-right and right-wing due to inept leaders

Public executions used to be common and yet people still murdered. It clearly isn’t a deterrent and worse case you execute an innocent person.

What problems would it solve?

They care now that interest rates have increased. That’s kinda what the whole “enshitification” and layoffs are all about. Tech companies desperately scrambling to make a profit.
