  • Too soon. #JusticeForTuvix #TryJanewayAtTheHague

  • This is unrelated to OP's stuff, but I've never had a chance to interact with an admin, and I have a question if you don't care. I'm mostly computer illiterate, but I thought a fun way to learn a few things would be to set up a single user lemmy instance. Not to host any communities or anything, just to host my account. But with the recent shit about CSAM I'm now worried about that. Like, would I be at risk of something like that getting on my server if it was on a server I federated with? I don't want to risk exposing myself to that kind of stuff. I'm very glad I wasn't one of the unfortunate people to click on one of those links last week, and it genuinely freaks me out. I don't wanna see that shit.

  • Ohhh. Gotcha. I need to start adding a signature to my comments that I am, in fact, a dumdum when it comes to anything tech. Lol.

  • Which instance defed'd from us?

  • I'd love to see the US fully mapped out with true highspeed rail, but part of the problem is the amount of time off work Americans have. We're guaranteed nothing, and a pretty good portion of us have to use vacation time for sick days. A travel option that takes longer isn't going to take off here because of that. People won't spend an extra day travelling, changing trains, et cetera, when their entire vacation is a 3 day weekend so that they only have to use one vacation day in case they have to take their kid to the doctor 4 months later.

Not even close to arguing against the trains, just saying that we need to change some other shit, too. We need better labor laws that couple with things like forced caps on flights, less subsidiaries for airlines, the tracks being nationalized, priority given to Amtrak on certain lines, and better accessibility on the trains themselves.

  • Oh, God, it feels good to be logged back in to this account. My .world alt just isn't the same, and I'm glad to see you back, too!

I love that intro. Honestly, it's my favorite trek intro.

Also, don't knock yourself, I'm sure you're just as pretty as Pike. Though that man is damn pretty... Lol.

  • It's not really about the tiny amount for an individual, it's a problem when multiplied by the millions upon millions of iPhone users, and because they steer the market, the millions and millions of Android users that will follow.

  • My best friend (we refer to each other as soul friends. It's like soul mates, but without the romance. Haha) I met while working security. I've worked security a long time, mainly solo posts. I hate working posts with another guard. Ended up working 20 hour shifts with him, stuck in an 8x8 shack with a 4 hour turn around. 12 shifts back to back. Never once ran out of conversation. Bestie for life.

  • I've never even considered blocking that bot... OMG. This is a game changer.

  • We got a u/stamets appreciate post going here?

Stamets, you have near singlehandedly made Lemmy my full time internet home. You keep me off the Other Place, and you bring joy and humor to my day, every day. Thank you for being a collector of humor and for distributing it in true Star Trek fashion, for the use of all. It's been a long road, getting from there to here, but thanks to you, our time is finally near.

    Live long and prosper, Stamets.

  • Not just expensive, they're also environmentally unsound! They use more power to charge, more plastic for casing. Hooray?

  • Can confirm. Love to cook. Also love receiving gentleman callers.

  • Earth is New Risa confirmed.

  • Admittedly not a techie person, so anything on that side of things I can't speak to at all, but on the political side of the fence (politics is what you're describing) it seems like we're in the nation state building era of the fediverse. Lines are being drawn, borders created, and rules invented. I think it'll take some time for the dust to settle, but eventually we'll probably end up with several super large (relatively, anyway) instances, run by major players, probably corporate, and a bunch of little servers that are forced to either be niche communities unto themselves (think Cuba) or effectively vassal states of the larger instances (think Micronesia) or run by one of the larger ones, but semi independent (think Guam).

But honestly, I still think that's better than the alternatives. That sea of fediverse Cubas is just recreating forums in a new way, and I'd love to get back to that. And even if there are massive corporately run instances, it seems like you'll still have way more freedom than you currently do under the meta/reddit/Twitter climate. (With that caveat that I do not know things about tech, so maybe not?)

But no, despite lemmy being a reddit lookalike, or Mastodon being twitteresque, none of these are replacements for those. They're their own thing, that will evolve and become more and more distinct as time goes on. Hopefully anyway. I still like it here way better than Reddit, even aside from my personal feelings about open source software, political bullshit surrounding rich people and corps. I like the climate here, there's plenty of content, and I feel like I can have actual conversations again (like this one!) Instead of just me being baited by someone looking for karma like on reddit. Yes, I hope Reddit dies, and yes, I came to lemmy from reddit, but even if neither of those were the case, I still think it's nicer here, and that the model has potential. Again, I don't know shit about tech. For all I know this isn't super scalable. But from the view point of instances as states instead of email, I see it being pretty expandable. We just have to figure out how to prevent America from nuking anyone. :p
