Tradition for one, a lot of traditions are simply incompatible with capitalism, for example you are technically not supposed to have your business open on Sundays if you are a Christian, but Christians have stopped doing this because if they just didn’t open on one day of the week they would get completed by the secular business that did.

Having a woman stay home and support the family, having women not work makes no sense from the perspective of the capitalist class

Having children to begin with in a capitalist system having kids makes no sense, they cost so much money to raise and you won’t be able to see them because you have to work for your rich overlords

which is why it might not make sense to you, but it makes perfect sense to the capitalists, who need more workers, and don't care how much time with their parents they get as toddlers, and who control the media and the education systems, which they use to socialise everyone from birth with the idea of having "the perfect family" with "2.5 kids", but also don't provide good sex education, nor family planning services, nor a society that is welcoming to alternative choices, like not having kids, or adopting older kids.

pride month (or the aspect of it you're alluding to) is the perfect example of capitalists willing to do anything for a profit. The idea that capitalism favours queer people is beyond laughable.

The existence of the multi billion, if not trillion dollar industries of marketing, advertising, market research, "store layout specialists" or whatever you might call them, "consumer psychology" (yes, an actual thing), and so on and so on, all there to brainwash you from birth to not only consume, but consume "brand" x over y (the existence of "brands" in itself!), prove your friend wrong.

Literally everything in our life is commodified for profit, not only our basic needs and human rights like food, housing, healthcare, but also the made up concepts capitalism invents to "fix" our problems, which it created, like stress and burnout (or halitosis), with ideas like "wellness" and "mindfulness" and whatever else they can use to make us buy more while distracting us from the real cause of our problems and making us feel like we've done something for ourselves, when we wouldn't need to be doing it in the first place if we weren't existing in a for-profit society.
There's also the whole "keeping up with the Jones's" and "American dream" type propaganda they push to make sure we're always "aspiring" (and so thinking like temporarily embarrassed millionaires and acting against our own interests). There is absolutely no need for there to be a new phone model being released every week, or for you to buy a new one every year, or for you to buy a new wardrobe every season to keep up with "fashion", another industry there to sell the unnecessary (the concept of "fashion" that is, not clothes themselves) but they create a need with the industries I've mentioned already, but also with shit like planned obsolescence and artificial scarcity.

The whole thing is a massive manipulation to get us to work hard to make money (mostly for the capitalists, but just enough for us) to buy a load of shit we don't need to solve problems created specifically to sell us said shit (along with the things we actually do need, which are put behind a literal pay wall by, and) to funnel even more money to the capitalists, while they make us think it was all our idea. Your friend is proof of it. And while it might be uncomfortable for them to realise that they've been completely taken in by the propaganda, it just goes to show how well it works.

The beauty of kbin/lemmy is how easy it is to block content you don't want to see, so either block the users who mostly post doom, or the news/politics communities as a whole. If you then still want to scroll news for a limited time, browse in incognito or from a secondary account ¯(ツ)/¯

They didn't just create the borders, but also actively pitted the different local groups in each region, all over the globe, against each other to keep them from joining forces against the colonisers and imperialists, so very deliberate war mongering.

Similar tactics are used today in the form of "culture wars" and institutional and systemic bigotry - we (the working class, the majority of the population) are divided and pitted against each other by those who want to keep us from joining forces and turning on them.

In case you were unaware, that show was based on a book written in 1985, which was based on real events that had all already happened by that point (and had been, for time immemorial).

There is zero logic to the idea that treating mentally ill people like shit is actually helping them, and anyone trying to convince you otherwise either has a vested interest in maintaining the status quo and/or is just a run of the mill ableist who thinks we somehow deserve it for being such a pain in their asses.

Edit to add: I'm truly sorry you've had this experience, and that you weren't only gaslit about it by the staff at the place, but also by people here using the textbook abuser line "it's for your own good". The first and most important thing anyone who actually cares about your wellbeing can do is to hear you, and treat you with the same respect they would treat someone not in crisis (or even better, but worse??? and then twist it in to being your fault? fuck that, and fuck them).

Imagine having to explain such an obvious fact of life to someone who claims to work in mental health, and what that means for the people they're in charge of "helping".. 🤯

That's because, despite all of the excuses this person has made for themselves, the point is to humiliate you. They want to make sure you know your place, that they are in charge, and that standing up for yourself is futile.

Why are mental hospitals run like prisons?

Ableism specifically, with a sprinkling of capitalism and all of its other ills - sexism, racism, queerphobia, and so on, on top, just to wrap it up nicely.

So not only are disabled and mentally ill people framed by our society as harmful burdenous wastes of oxygen (like defiant women and PoC were, and often still are), but those there to "care" for us are also not trained, nor paid enough, to actually give a shit about how they treat us. By design.

They can achieve all the therapeutic benefits they seek, and significantly more (like actually accommodating our needs instead of forcing us to comply with theirs), if they treated their patience like the human beings that we are rather than the threat and burden they've been indoctrinated to see as us. Thing is, that way they won't get to abuse their power over vulnerable people, so the system is never going to change, because that's exactly what it's there for (any small exceptions to the rule just prove the rule, and this includes both more holistic and respectful settings and the actual individuals involved in "care" who aren't in it to feel superior to others, even subconsciously - both are exceedingly hard to come by).

In a society obsessed with hierarchy, it really isn't surprising that institutions that exist firmly if not exclusively to enforce a superior/inferior paradigm, by whatever means necessary, are the default.

because it's significantly easier to blame and complain about women than it is to "risk" becoming equals by joining the fight against the patriarchy which is actually to blame.

Just like it's easier for them to dismiss their behaviour as "a joke" and gaslight you in to thinking you're basically "just being hysterical", than it is to admit they're being actively misogynistic (which they 100% are).
