  • If you try to inject this conversation into normal discourse you might be surprised how fast you discover some people’s prejudices against mental illness.

Sadly, I wouldn't be surprised at all, I've been making these points for years and have had some truly toxic reactions.. The irony would be delicious if it wasn't so harmful..

  • New England stone walls lie at the intersection of history, archaeology, ecology and geoscience

    Also, cinema

  • No, what there has been is an increase in an already prevalent phenomenon (see: mass shooters) of blaming mental illness and/or personality disorders for abusive, violent, and flat out fascistic actions, when they don't actually cause those, it's just so much easier to do than to think more deeply and/or critically about the systems and structures that don't only enable, but encourage such behaviour, especially in those with privilege and power (because actually mentally ill people are much more likely to be victims of violence and other abuse, than perpetrate it).

Using diagnosable conditions as shorthand for "abusive" or "toxic" or "harmful" or "violent" or "racist" or whatever else, is ableism. It deepens already existing and harmful stigmas, prevents people from seeking help and support and being open about their struggles, and actually puts them at greater risk of further abuse just for being diagnosed the way they are, even if they've never hurt a fly.

    In short:

“Are you saying that murderers are right in the head??”
No there’s definitely something wrong with someone’s way of thinking if they can justify killing innocent people, but this doesn’t necessarily mean that they have a mental illness.
Extremist beliefs isn’t a mental illness.
    Bigotry isn’t a mental illness.
    Entitlement isn’t a mental illness.
    Hate isn’t a mental illness.
Having a dysfunctional moral compass isn’t a mental illness.
We need to stop categorizing all these things as some undefinable “mental illness” and start looking at what we do as a society to develop and justify these things to a degree where people use them to justify killing.
    Yes!
Dehumanization is something you Have to look for. If the murderer doesn’t see the person they killed as a person, then mental illness is probably not the main factor there.
Plenty of people murder women, poc, lgbt people, people of other religions etc. because they don’t see them as people.
Think about genocides - they aren’t perpetrated by big group of people/a government who all got mentally ill together the same way at the same time somehow, they just didn’t consider what they did murder because they didn’t see the victims as people.

  • This reminded me of those msn messenger nudges from back in the day.. I'm definitely not the target audience this time around.. 😂

  • Thanks for proving my point - the science (nor anything attached to reality, really) doesn't matter to cruel and wilfully ignorant misogynists.. ¯(ツ)

  • It never was about the science, and the science will never convince those who want to force births. It isn't even just that the cruelty is the point, but it's about conserving "traditional values" of women at home completely occupied with having and raising children and serving their husbands, not existing alongside them in the world, in service of the patriarchy which in turn serves capitalism (more kids = more workers, women at home doing all that unpaid work..).

  • he does not get labeled as such in the news anymore

That's because the philanthropy is working exactly as intended - to white wash his reputation, and make him out to be "the good billionaire".

Moving down from no. 1 to no. 5, at that scale of wealth literally has no impact on him, but rather it's money well spent to take the heat and attention off of him so he can continue exploiting an hoarding in peace.

  • At least it wasn't you who did it, and you got a cool gift out of it lol

  • You say you'd check, but couldn't look up "boiling water flowers" before replying here? At least when this happened I had the excuse of not having the internet yet (and being a literal child, following the obviously unclear instructions of a professional, to the best of my understanding)..

  • An antique crystal vase my parents received as a wedding gift.
I was maybe in my tweens and bought flowers for some occasion (a birthday or anniversary maybe) and the florist said I should use boiling water to keep them fresh (yes, it is a thing), but obviously I misunderstood, and not knowing any better I added the boiling water directly in to the vase (which I chose because it was my favourite) and of course it exploded in my hand. Lucky I wasn't hurt, and I did manage to glue some of it back together, but I was not getting away with it. My mother was furious.

  • Back in my day no one had to tell us not to put a banana in our ear, I'm telling you, the youth of today... Shakes fist angrily at clouds

(sorry, it's the first thing my brain pulled up when I read the title 😂😂)

  • If it won't let me untick all but the essential cookies easily - close tab, move on.

Recently I realised that some "reject all" options still don't reject the "legitimate" bullshit, so I now avoid those sites too (and no, I don't trust that extensions that claim to reject all for me will actually reject all).

I've got better things to do with my time than scrutinise these cookie pop ups and/or go through lengthy lists individually unticking options. Fuck that noise - don't have minimal respect for users? Then I'm definitely not providing you any of my data (the sites that make it the hardest rarely hold information you can't easily find elsewhere)..

  • Sometimes.
If we're playing or she's clearly agitated, I wouldn't, because I know she'll get defensive and I'll get hurt. But if we're cuddly or she's sleepy, then yeah, I've been known to creep up to/pick up the cat and blow a raspberry in that belly floof. Most I get then is a light paw tap on my head telling me to stahp lol

  • For starters, the name, as well as the "ideal" itself is an oxymoron - anarchism is about abolishing hierarchy, and capitalism is the epitome of it. The two are inherently incompatible, in the same way nationalism and socialism are, and will lead to similar results.

In case you're not trolling (which I seriously doubt, but still) - stop watching whatever content it is that got you here, the pipeline you're on leads directly to a bunch of fascists and child abusers.

  • This is far more than mildly infuriating, this is actively putting peoples lives at risk, it's enraging and quite scary, and why disabled and other vulnerable people are continuing to be more isolated than ever.

Fuck this person and the bullshit they spread. I rarely leave the house, but if I did and someone handed me something like this I'd grab the whole pile and set it on fire, casually roll over their feet with my wheelchair on my way, too (E: actually, scratch that, I wouldn't want to get that close to the disease vector, even with my mask on).

  • Na, those nails definitely deserve to be seen, that's such a cool design!
Great choice of book, too lol
