  • I recommend you try Gentoo and DWM. You don't have to use this setup forever, but at least try setting it up. Installing Gentoo, patching DWM and st, etc. is fun and it's an interesting experience. If you want to use Wayland, check out dwl and the foot terminal emulator. Perhaps you're actually gonna like Gentoo and stick with it, I think it's a great distro. They also provide binaries for larger programs, so you don't have to compile stuff like Firefox. But definitely try out custom kernels.

  • I haven't seen such a list. But GitHub maintains a repo at https://github.com/github/dmca with all the DMCA notices they receive. And also, fuck Mazda as well for taking down innocent FOSS projects. Simply for this reason, I'm never buying any of their cars. There are enough other car makers on the market.

  • I don't even think this is honest, I doubt that a small FOSS project is causing "significant economic damage" to a company of such size. It's just user-hostility and the wish to control the users and the products they bought and paid for. Unfortunately, this is an increasing trend among companies.

  • The UEFI firmware shouldn't connect to the internet at all. You can't rule it out entirely, but the threat is pretty small. Theoretically, it can access your hard drives, but again, it's very unlikely that your BIOS will exfiltrate your data and send it somewhere. If you want to be sure, use LUKS for full disk encryption.

  • Still a ridiculous move. If I buy an appliance, I pay for it and I own it. I am allowed to do with it whatever I want. If I want to use my own solution for controlling it, hosted on my own server, I should have every right to do so. Fuck corporations and their shitty cloud solutions.
