  • I also drink 4lokos which are 12-14%.

Your poor liver and pancreas. Also those don't even taste good IMO...

  • That's nuts for beer. Untapped says that one started at 14% in 2015 but now the new 2024 batch is 18.7%. Surprisingly good reviews all along. Sometimes too much alcohol harms the taste IMO.

  • Yep, most barley wines I've seen were in the 9-13% range. For comparison, typical grape wine is roughly 12-16%, so similar territory in terms of the quantity it takes to get you sloshed.

Lower ABV is definitely better for all-day drinking, especially on a hot day when you need hydration too. e.g. Germans like their summer Radlers which are just lager mixed with lemon soda, often only ~3% ABV overall.

  • 6.5% isn't even notable for craft beer. That's typical for a double or bock. I've had quadruples that pushed 14% and the article mentions 16%.

Of course none of those are very good for active events like pro sports where you probably just want a nice buzz all day.

  • I mean this in a constructive way: you're literally playing it wrong. Elden Ring is a Souls game, which (in terms of gameplay) is the complete opposite of a hack & slash button masher. There's almost no animation cancelling, so once you press a button, you're committed to the outcome and have to wait for it to finish. So if you miss a heavy swing with a giant 25 kg greataxe, you'll be wide open for the enemies to smash you. The game requires self-control to make every input matter.

Once you acclimate though, I think the combat feels very good. It's responsive (once you accept the fact that you can't cancel actions), flexible, and the hitboxes are way more accurate than most games.

But don't think you have to master it all at once. The enemies are tough, but you don't have to fight fair. Sneak and backstab if you can, soften them up with arrows or ranged spells, debuff them with throwables, summon some spirit ash helpers, use the environment to land attacks from the high ground, stack up poison and bleed effects, use a shield to block-counter, use your weapon abilities to help break enemy poise, etc etc. You can create entire builds around any of these but of course there's power in combinations.

  • I prefer to put my swap partition on CD-RW.

  • Mac has been on a few things in the last couple years. I recall seeing him on Mark Rober's channel and Angry Video Game Nerd. He's still great.

  • IMO Mini Metro quickly becomes super stressful. I assume Motorways is the same.

Instead I would say Islanders is quite relaxing. Super minimal city building.

What I'd really like though is something for Steam Deck with a good flow state. Any suggestions? Lonely Mountains Downhill looks pretty good maybe. Someone else mentioned Superflight which is great but maybe too minimal.

  • Looks pretty good, glad to see another true Linux system. No weight listed though, and no backside buttons, so we'll see how it turns out.

  • Wouldn't the cashier get more opportunities to swipe money every time they open the drawer? And how would they explain the drawer not adding up at the end of the shift?

  • How does one reconcile that statement with the aphorism "Justice delayed is justice denied"?

  • One other longshot: You didn't say what game but if it's a smaller / indie title you could try reaching out to the devs and saying "Hey you know this would be a ton of fun on a tablet or PC touchscreen". You never know, maybe they didn't considere that, but they might agree that it's a great idea and add it officially.

  • TIL I'm a grandma.

  • Chronos' guide is the most comprehensive one I know but I don't see anything there about trackpad multi-touch. My impression is that they're really designed for one thumb each while you hold the Deck. (Side note, the trackpads do accept a surprisingly deep range of pressure input).

How about using the touchscreen? Many sources claim it accepts 10-finger input. Of course the game itself would probably have to support that (common on mobile but rare on PC). Or maybe there's a plugin somewhere to map specific screen region touches to other input buttons and such.

  • Should have been a haiku 😞

  • Sure, that works too, if you have the hard disk space. If not, or if that space is on a different machine, then Ventoy is pretty handy.
