  • You haven't answered my core questions. You seem to be suggesting there's a centralized or concerted push to promote/market Signal rather than an assortment of disconnected posts and articles. I'm open to that possibility, but what's the evidence?

  • If ammo got simplified then I'm sure weapon condition / repairs got the axe too. Wish is fine I suppose. But hopefully attachments like scopes and suppressors and grenade launchers are still included, those were great.

On ammo I'd be okay with simplifying NATO vs Warsaw Pact rounds because that's a bit hard to track for anyone unfamiliar, but as you say I liked the overall immersion of matching bullets to the gun.

I'm hoping the PC modding scene takes off because that will let us customize all kinds of things.

  • Where is it being promoted/marketed? I haven't seen that. I'm only aware of Signal because of tech news and privacy threads.

  • That was my immediate thought too.

  • I hope Biden appoints a new director who does even less for Trump.

  • I'll second this entirely.

Prey 2006 is a slightly gory boomer shooter with interesting topsy-turvy levels, gravity tricks, a few cool enemies and guns and powers, and a campy alien abduction / invasion story. It might be a little underrated in its genre. Definitely fun.

But Prey 2017 was more of a clever stealth action / psych horror title in the vein of Deus Ex and of course System Shock. Brilliant interconnected level design, a deep story, a good (though not super original) roster of guns and superpowers, some tricky puzzles, and a few interesting and enemies. It gets a good amount of love but I still think it deserves wider recognition as an excellent game.

It's frankly stupid that they have the same name.

  • I played Dirt 2 & 3 and enjoyed them. 2 leaned more into actual rally racing (non-looping course with a copilot) and I was a bit slow to warm up to that but ended up quite liking it. 3 added a lot more Gymkhana which seemed a bit familiar from drift racing but ended up being even more challenging and fun IMO. Both are a far cry from traditional racing (and the games include plenty of that too) but I love the variety.

  • "My mother ... would give us a hard time sometimes, and she would say to us, 'I don’t know what’s wrong with you young people. You think you just fell out of a coconut tree?' " Harris said with a laugh. "You exist in the context of all in which you live and what came before you."

That's actually kinda nice. I can appreciate that. We're all the middle children of history, in a way.

  • Where's the Codemasters love? For me, the GRID and DiRT series both strike the best balance between realism and arcadey fun. Huge shame they were bought out by EA.

Also, don't hate me but Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is kind of a better Mario Kart. Though I haven't played MK8.

  • LGIO is so damn good. Cracks me up every time.

  • I had a friend who had a high end FLAC player and kept trying to convince me it was the best thing ever. Honestly though it didn't sound any different than a really good MP3 to me though.

The actual intent behind MP3 was to sound the same. Just like all later lossy codecs, it uses a psychoacoustic model to remove high frequency harmonics and other "buried" sounds that are supposedly imperceptible to most human ears, in order to save on data. At its max (CBR 320 kbps) almost nobody should be able to tell the difference from full CD quality.

I had a friend who had a high end FLAC player and kept trying to convince me it was the best thing ever. Honestly though it didn't sound any different than a really good MP3 to me though.

FLAC has a different design philosophy. It's lossless which means it literally keeps every byte of data from a CD or similar source but just compresses it. You can still get down to like 1/4 the size (vs like 1/8 for a high end MP3 or 1/12 for an average MP3). Storage was a big deal a couple decades ago but in this age of 4+ TB hard disks there's not much reason not to go all FLAC all the time (except maybe if you really wanna cram as much music as possible into your phone).

  • I like both. I was just making the point that "better" can depend on circumstances.

I quite like the sound of vinyl in general. It's highly variable depending on the exact material used and how much play play it has gotten and even the read head, but that's also part of the charm.

A FLAC file will always sound the same on the same equipment. Which can also be a benefit.

  • I'm having trouble connecting my record player to my car stereo over Bluetooth. Also it keeps skipping. Help!

  • This definitely happens, though it's not remotely as common as just voting for your preferred party in the primary.

A friend and I both voted Republican in a primary a couple years ago. The Democratic lineup wasn't interesting and it was obvious who was going to win on it. Quite frankly our votes didn't matter much there. But the GOP contenders were a mixed bag of semi-moderates and MAGA bootlickers. We felt it was most important to keep the Trumpy psychos out of the general election, so we voted against them.

In a way I think it was the right call at the time. On the other hand, I get a lot of SMS spam to my number now from scammy pro-Trump sources. Of course I report those to the FTC every time, but it's still gross.

  • Windows 7 Ultimate for me. I still kept it as a boot option on my main PC until about a year ago because I thought I still needed it for a couple windows apps and games.

I tried Win8 at one point and hated the changes. I also tried Win10 and one of those "forced bloody updates" bricked my machine so I said 'fuck that' for good.

I've dabbled in Linux for 20 years, and run Ubuntu on my living room HTPC for at least a dozen. My main PC runs EndeavourOS now and even gaming has been pretty great.
