Apple created the first laptop with a backlit keyboard. The first laptop milled from a single piece of aluminum. I’m pretty sure MagSafe wasn’t used on laptops before Apple. I think the first anodized aluminum case as well.

Smart phones before the iPhone didn’t have Apps. And they weren’t all that good. Blackberry had bbm and the business world to make it slightly successful. Windows phone 6? It was fine. Not incredibly special but more useful than a flip phone.

They’ve consistently had the best notebook display resolutions.

Their eco system every one talks about not wanting to be locked in? Incredibly innovative. Go from one device to another with no transition. It’s actually a really big convenience feature.

They also have come up with innovative new ways to make awful desktop computers every couple of years. I guess the Mac mini is fine.

No problem! That means you get to be one of todays lucky 10,000. They were definitely sought out positions. It did eventually enter common discussion as just a group of tech giants that pay higher than others. That’s why Microsoft was always implied for me.

There were tons of people who’d get a couple years in at one of the major companies and then just use that experience to work wherever they wanted and enjoy themselves. I couldn’t see myself working for one of those companies though. I think it’d be cool to work on some of the stuff they work on, but it seems like the work culture has gone down hill from when Google used to be considered an awesome place to be a dev.

You’re right that it won’t. I will say that I switched from Firefox to chrome when it was still in beta (nobody I talk to ever remembers the “goats teleported” metric). Chrome was way faster. It didn’t handle memory well, but it was the best for me for a long time. The extensions were great.

I just downloaded Firefox on all my devices and I’ve been happy so far. Not as fast as chrome or edge, but gets me closer to leaving google.

It was actually about the stocks. Microsoft wasn’t a part of it because they weren’t “new”. I’m pretty sure Microsoft is actually in the new tech-stock-group.

After it was popularized as a group of tech stocks to buy, people just used it to talk about the biggest software companies, and a lot of devs I talked to (myself included) kinda implied Microsoft when we said FAANG. And while those companies did tend to pay higher than other devs, I think it’s pretty understood that comes with expectations and stress. None of my dev friends would ever wanna work in that environment.

Did you even read your boogey man bill or just take Fox News as gods word? The bill only says someone is guilty of a felony if they cause damage, bodily harm, or threaten a person because of sexual identity. It just adds a protection to people who are being victimize for a specific aspect of their identity.

As long as you weren’t planning on any hate crimes you can misgender people as much as you want in Michigan. It makes you an asshole, but not a felon.

If you would like to read the bill you’re parroting bullshit about, I can link you to the actual text of it on Michigan’s website so you don’t have to be scared of going to jail for misgendering someone anymore.

Again unless you’re planning a hate crime against them. Then you’re n asshole and a felon. Because hate crimes are bad. That’s not a political thing right? Like damaging someone’s property or body is illegal all the time. It’s just more illegal when you do it intentionally because of an aspect of their identity. I mean you don’t think it’s okay to assault disabled folks because of their disability?

I subscribe to a lot of similar communities myself, however I’ve recently gone on a bit of a culling spree. It seems a lot of people cross post to the various communities, so I see the same article posted by 3 different people in 3 different communities, and now I have this article about twitter’s rebranding 9 times.

Since my app doesn’t mark read on scroll I have to vote on it or open it to make it go away. It’s not enjoyable, so I’ve just been limiting my engagement to only the more popular or active communities.

When I get this issue, if I collapse a comment, it fixes this. It’ll be great when this is fixed, though.

It is hard, I agree. I’m not very good at it myself. But even semi-decent docs are better than googling around or stepping through a decompiled package.

And it’s super useful to new developers, and would have saved me a lot of time and frustration when I was new.

That’s fair. At my company we have technical writers for the external docs and internal docs are usually written by whoever has worked on something and got frustrated that nobody in the company could give them a high level overview, and they had to go through the code for a couple hours.

Tbf though, I’ll take docs that aren’t written super well that tell me how things from our internal libraries should be used. Or just comments. I’ll take comments telling me WHY we are doing something.

I don’t expect our internal docs to be MSDN docs. But I like to read an overview of at least the workflow before I jump into updating a large project.

I’d rather read the docs than just about anything. I love good documentation. I wanna know how and why things work.

The problem is that basically nobody has good docs. They are almost all either incomplete or unreadable.

It would also be nice to have a show thread or load context button or something. There’s a way to load all comments, but not the thread you’ve been replied to in. That makes responding inconvenient as well. If that’s what you were talking about then I agree, but just in case I wanted to throw that out there.

The devs are working on rewriting their state management, so this probably won’t be updated any time soon, but it’s a good idea to have.

I’m an apple user. I don’t think these things. I have a plethora of apple devices. I also have a few chromebooks, a high-end desktop I built for gaming and developing.

We as people really need to stop generalizing and insulting {X group of people who are not me}. I mean, you don’t like apple. That’s totally fine! Use whatever pleases you. That doesn’t bother me at all. But stop calling me brainwashed for enjoying an ecosystem that makes my life and day-to-day easier and more enjoyable.

People like to think of themselves as superior to the other group. But we are all individuals with our own preferences and life experiences. I had a google g1. I’ve had multiple android phones. Admittedly, they were all during android’s Wild West days where I barely got any major os updates and half of them failed within a year.

What I’m saying (and I know this is a reply to you, but this has been frustrating me with a LOT of things, not just “Apple users”) is that we should try to put things in perspective before insulting an entire group of people that we don’t even know. That’s my two cents.

Hey, we all start somewhere. I remember the first time I broke prod I was freaking out. I skipped lunch and a company event with my boss while we figured out what happened, and we had a few major customers who couldn’t use our software all morning.

Screwing up is what makes us devs in my opinion. When the shit hits the fan and the fire flares, that’s when we find out our real mettle. I like to joke that I moonlight as a fire fighter lol.

Keep at it and I promise you’ll get your confidence when you have that major breakthrough and fix a complicated problem with a simple solution.

If you’re gonna work on a personal project I suggest doing something you want that isn’t easily accessible. Something everything out there is subscription based or something. Do something fun that you will actually use. That helps you stay motivated.

I’m a software dev and one of my coworkers is a hunt and peck typist. I couldn’t function that way. He’s actually incredibly fast though, so it works for him. Definitely wouldn’t for me.

That happens to us all. My first year I felt useless. Once I started running projects and getting the opportunity to actually design our framework, I got a lot more confidence. The first project I ran I was not prepared for. But I improved in confidence so much while I did it.

Imposter syndrome affects us a lot. But even if you’re a shit dev, remember this: we literally do magic. Think about it for a moment. We write words in an esoteric script to convince electricity to create things that didn’t previously exist. Even the worst wizard is still a wizard. And the best part is that they can improve! There’s so many resources out there to improve your skills. It might not be for everyone, but I love my job.

It’s also sensationalist bs. The actual charges were for performing an abortion without being a doctor and for concealing the death.

It was her daughter that she gave abortion pills to, and then helped dispose of the fetus. The daughter was 29 weeks pregnant and the law (since 2010 btw) is abortions can only be performed up to 20 weeks. The daughter also only got the charge for hiding the body.

But yeah 29 weeks is well past viability. At that point it’s more like inducing still birth. Nobody pleaded guilty to abortion. We need to fight for our rights, but we also need to do it while educated.

And self driving cars don’t generally do that either? Humans have done this. Self driving cars have done this. If the ambulance and car were self driver, cross vehicle communication could prevent any car from refusing to follow the law and get over, improving EMS response times.

One example does not make generally. Self driving cars are not ready yet. But I don’t understand why anybody WOULDNT want safer, faster, more enjoyable commutes.

Humans are way less safe than self driving cars. Our biggest concern with self driving cars should be the absolute massive amount of data the car companies would be able to mine, and the fact that regulation in this country will obviously never be in place to protect us from that.

I gotta disagree here. Our goal of we want cars to be around should be to replace ALL human drivers. Especially on highways. Cars can communicate with other cars, which would almost completely remove congestion and traffic from people who’ve never heard of zipper merging and people who refuse to let anyone in front of them ever because they need to save that three seconds.

People drive like assholes. Road rage incidents are not infrequent. People speed, drive drunk, cut people off, forget their exit and do incredibly stupid and dangerous things to get back instead of getting off on the next one, and overall should not be trusted piloting a 2,000 pound missile around other folks.

If every car was self driving, then safety on the road would skyrocket. Travel time would drop drastically. There would be no downsides (other than it won’t solve the US’s car-centric design). Am I saying we are ready? No.

I’m saying “they need to aid the driver and not replace them” is way off base. Idk what your commute is like, but I’d feel a million times safer if asshole A didnt drive around blaring his horn and brake checking me because I’m only going ten mph over the speed limit and not the 20 everyone else is, while asshole B is riding my ass trying to get me to speed up, leaving me 0 space to brake in an emergency.
