  • I will try to do an ELI5.

Piped is what is known as a "proxy", or rather an interface to YouTube.

There is a very popular piece of code called NewPipeExtractor, which is used to scrape data from the YouTube website.

Piped utilizes NewPipeExtractor to set up an "intermediary", a proxy website that looks and feels pretty much like YouTube.

The good thing about watching videos through the Piped proxy site is that YouTube doesn't get to know your IP address. Which is why it is very popular among privacy advocates.

That is it in a nutshell. If interested, you will find more information in their GitHub page.

    Hope this helped.

  • You probably have the box checked in "Settings" --> "Look and Feel" --> "Use Custom tabs".

    Try unchecking that box.

  • I do watch videos from YouTube because of its massive content, but I tend to use invidious or piped links - because I don't want to provide YT any more traffic than they need.

  • But a seed has been planted. And if we care for it right. It will grow eventually.

    Well put.

  • I think they did, it's just that they are way too egoistic and dick to admit that.

  • Reputation is a perishable commodity. It is very hard to replenish it once gone.

Xwitter and Reddit understood it the hard way. Even if Unity goes back to exactly where they were before this ruckus - people will think twice before trusting them again.

  • Have tried out quite a few of the apps (was stuck the longest with Voyager, it's awesome) - but I tend to come back to Jerboa ever so often - may be because it is the oldest Android client for Lemmy, so probably the most tried and tested.

I kinda like the vintage look of Jerboa (and the cool icon) - so as soon as Jerboa gets its search feature enhanced (right now it just searches for communities, not posts or comments - but I hear that work is in progress) - Jerboa will become the best Lemmy app out there, at least for me.

  • Not sure how active development is for liftoff anymore though

Kinda agree with this. While I post this reply on Sept 17, 2023 - I see in F-Droid that Liftoff was last updated on July 30, 2023. When demands for Lemmy Apps are at an all-time high, this might indeed seem slow. Jerboa appears to be updated more frequently (from which I am typing this).

But I have tried Liftoff already once, and I really liked it. - So hoping it would be updated soon !

Update : and just read that the Liftoff Dev just became a parent of twins. Incidentally I also did last month - So I know what kind of mental, physical and emotional drain that can be on your life. Congratulations to the Dev !!

  • Is this article paywalled ?

  • OnePlus8 - pinky.

For most apps I have opted for "toolbar at the bottom". Along with my pinky, it works at least for me.

And I have large hands too, but that's besides the point.

  • Nope, I didn't. But they all being A-holes, show no sign of digging their own graves like Reddit, X, and Unity did.

Guess they are supervillains then, lol.

  • Reddit, Xwitter, Unity..what next in the queue of "let me fuck myself" ?

  • Yes, and ? OP Say something we don't know..

  • Google is fundamentally an Ad-company - so promoting ad-blockers is bad for their revenue.
