  • Nintendo are trying to avoid a shortage and scalpers at launch, which is why they are producing the device in large numbers before having officially unveiled it. Given how highly anticipated this console has been for years and how many people have seen it or at least parts of it by sheer necessity, the leaks are unsurprising.

They were also wise to not have revealed the Switch 2 any earlier, because it would have jeopardized sales of the Switch 1. Enough companies have made this mistake in the past. Leaks - which the vast majority of their overwhelmingly non-techie customer base will barely even hear about - are a small price to pay for the obvious economic advantages of this approach.

  • Reminds me of the at least 40 year old calculator my mother is still using, even though you need essentially a search light both for it to power on and to make out anything on the dim LCD screen. It's always been like this though.

  • Russia is struggling to win against a country a fraction its size, population, economy, per capita income, military power, R&D capabilities, etc. The mighty Russian military got its few not completrly useless troops eradicated by a ragtag combination of militia and conscripts rocking sometimes century old equipment - but you're telling us, among a long list of other nonsense, that it can't be defeated. Their navy was defeated by a country that doesn't have a bloody navy! Their force projection capabilities are so utterrly emnbarrassingly bad that a mere lack of a railway connection derailed (heh) their plans to wrap this "special military operation" up in three days. Hell, Putin is so weak, so afraid of his own people, he cant even call the war he started a war. Have you ever thought about that?

And by the way, Putin is literally and openly trying to rebuild the Russian empire in the clumsiest way possible, yet you rant about the evil US empire.

But sure, we are the deranged ones here.

  • Not to mention, the political instability and insecurity, the sheer chaos caused by the violent rhetoric alone is exactly what Putin wants, since it weakens the West. In his zero-sum view of the world, this means Russia benefits, but he doesn't realize that Russia has directly benefited from a stable West for as long as he has been in power.

  • Unless the collapse results in a new warlord era, this time with nukes. Similar to fears the rest of the world had after the fall of the Soviet Union. In other words: There's probably some future Tom Clancy writealike already sharpening their quill.

  • Electricity must be cheap where you are. If you have to use an x86 platform, please use a modern one that is both vastly more powerful and adept at decoding video while also needing a tiny fraction as much power and producing next to no heat and noise.

  • "An Israeli", sure buddy. Reminds me of Fox News "some people say".

Israeli Jews are not predominately white, are one of the native peoples of the land, are the majority, not the minority in the country, there's an Israeli Arab supreme court judge and Israeli Arabs have full voting rights and parliamentary representation that reflects their portion of the population. They are being discriminated against, but equaling this to Rhodesia is preposterous. It's more akin to how e.g. Latinos are being discriminated against in the US or Turks in Germany.

    colonialist geonicide [sic] apartheid state

Which country is Israel a colony of? This has to be the least efficient genocide in history, given that Palestinian population growth is outpacing Israeli population growth ever since it has been measured, even during this war. And the apartheid claim is ridiculous due to the aforementioned legal rights Israeli Arab citizens have.

  • Keep in mind that these are low-end TVs with, according to reviewers, generally subpar picture and sound quality, with quality issues that make them worse to look at than even old TVs. If you just need "a TV" and your only concerns are that the device is flat, the image in color and some sort of noise is escaping the speaker holes, they'll do, but don't expect anything more than that. To me at least, it makes more sense to not connect a smart TV to the network and use a separate streaming device attached to it.

I would even buy a slightly older used dumb TV from a reputable manufacturer over one of these sketchy things, since it's not like LCD TVs are finicky technology - they tend to last for an incredibly long time in my experience, easily 15 years or more. On my parents' 2008ish Toshiba (1080p and every analog and digital input in the known universe, which, in combination with an excellent analog upscaler, makes it awesome for old games consoles - but it's of course no looker in terms of colors by modern standards), the only thing that has broken so far is the spring of the power button, so I bent a wire press it in and a switch at the plug to be able to turn it off completely.

This is getting a bit off-topic, but a relative of mine replaced her flatscreen TV from 2002 (!) just two years ago - and it was still working fine, but since it only had an analog tuner and SD resolution, she was looking for an upgrade. I got her a small 4K OLED from Samsung (since discontinued) and she's very happy with it (even the "smart" features are quite inoffensive), although I did have to get her a soundbar as well, because if there's one thing that has regressed on TVs, it's sound quality, in part due to how ever thinner and lighter designs have reduced speakers to little more than phone speakers on some devices.

  • I managed to get my entire family onto this service and even some friends. That said, they are almost all also using at least WhatsApp, because they are only using Signal to stay in touch with me (since I'm not on WhatsApp).

  • I used a Fire TV for a while (because it was cheap and you could sideload almost any Android app), but at some point I got tired of the awful (and increasingly worse) UI and sluggishness of the device, so I splurged on a Shield TV Pro a few years ago. It's night and day in terms of performance alone - and yes, you can change the function of any remote button with the Button Remapper app. Custom launchers are also possible, although I haven't tried this in a while.

The main downside is that the device has much less reliable WiFi, for some reason. After some infuriating days of troubleshooting attempts, I solved that issue once and for all by relocating a meshnet satellite close to the device and running an Ethernet cable.

  • Exactly my thinking. Also, the built-in Ethernet port is very useful and kind of sells me on this device. I know, dongles exist and even work with smartphones, but this is neat.

I don't quite like how the device looks from the front though. The gap between the accessory and the display is kind of ugly - and since the gamepad accessory has a different shape compared to the others, one can't easily design a different 3D printed case for the device. Although, maybe I could print a different shell for the keyboard and GPIO board.

  • Good analysis, but I checked again and must have either misremembered or different versions of the same test were different in this regard: Upon running one of these again (this one is from 2002), it reported 32 GB of RAM as 2 GB of RAM and gave the system the green light. Notice how it also reported a fabulously high speed for the (virtual) CD-ROM drive:

You're right though that running it in XP SP2 compatibility mode results in the check recognizing much less RAM:

I never thought that this compatibility mode would limit the amount of memory that is available to an application. In fact, this is the case with all other working compatibility modes as well (Vista, 7, 8 - 95 and 98/ME don't work with this application).
