  • I think it is, and I've also seen it happen more lately as well. Though I feel like it might be that previously the UI would freeze where as after a recent update it seems to go to an error page more often.

I know other instances have the issue (and have had the issue for a while as well), and have reduced the problem by deploying multiple containers for the UI. Hence why I've done it, hopefully it will help 🙂

  • Also, I have deployed a second lemmy-ui container. We've had some previous discussion about how often the Lemmy.nz website will freeze or stop working while apps and alternate frontends work fine. The second container is load balanced with the first and so the theory is that if Lemmy-ui is being weird you should get directed to the alternate one and so not be impacted too long (there can still be a few seconds if you're being redirected from one to the other, while the server works out if it's down or not).

Also, the Mlmym frontend (old.lemmy.nz) seems to be a prime target for web/AI scrapers, it's responsible for 50% of our traffic and I doubt that's an accurate representation. I have a bunch of rules to block known web scrapers but I have now added a blanket Cloudflare challenge to anyone accessing old.lemmy.nz from outside the country. You should only see it once and then be fine from there. If you're accessing from within NZ you shouldn't see it.

As always, happy to answer any questions 🙂

  • An unexciting update but I have tried pre-heating my coffee cup and now I'm capable of making a frothy milk coffee that is decently hot.

  • We have one just like this, but without the purple feather. It maybe used to have one, it's very old.

  • Eh I don't even need to think about this anymore. I have a cron job that backs up every March 31st.

  • Hmm the $1B number came from Labour. They are probably referring to a total cost of the project, which would not all be wasted as that investigative work would form the basis of the new plan.

Interesting how the project was ballooning to possibly $4B. That's some massive cost to build new terminals. I'd support spending it if they build the southern one near Blenheim instead of Picton, for cutting the journey time.

  • I think the major cost saving is having smaller ships means less port side infrastructure, so even if we do upgrade the port to modern standards, it will still be cheaper.

Does that include $1B in cancellation costs? (number from near end of article)

It will be interesting to see when they announce the cost. I'm not sure they even know, it doesn't seem like they have asked for quotes yet. Just browsed for ferries on trade me.

Also, forty rail cars is a lot, each one is equivalent to a fully loaded truck at least.

We currently have one ferry that can take 27 rail cars. Are the new ones intended to replace the old ones or work alongside them? I'm assuming replace them. So I hope both of the new ferries can take rail, as every time someone drives Aratere into something the rail capacity vanishes:

As of 2024, Aratere is New Zealand's only rail ferry. When the vessel is not available, rail freight between the North and South Islands must be transferred to trucks, driven onto other Cook Strait ferries, and then transferred back to rail after the crossing, with associated additional time and cost.

  • No, they removed that clause some 2 or 3 years back.

  • If it helps your decision, they probably have plenty of previous photos to use so it probably won't make much difference 😅

  • Haha I have definitely come a long way from where I was even a couple of years ago. And back then, it was a lot of progress from a couple of years earlier than that. I don't notice it until someone new comes along asking really basic questions and suddenly you're the one answering instead of asking!

  • If it fails the facial recognition then it just goes to a person to check, so if it's not obvious it might just get approved anyway.

If you have a big mole and they notice it's on the opposite side then they will probably reject the photo, but most if the time the mirroring or distortion is hard to spot so it will probably get accepted anyway.

  • Try to avoid selfies if you can! Get someone else to take the photo. Selfies can distort the photo and also tend to mirror it. It messes with facial recognition.

It might not be too big of a deal if you're not using it for travel but the electronic gates at customs will have trouble because they use facial recognition to let you through.

Or maybe the advice is to use selfie mode if you aren't using it for travel since it will impact on the ability for the government to surveil you?

  • Yeah if you’re using library books, some of the e-platforms (but not all) insist that Adobe Digital Editions has to be present on your machine to let you download it in the first place.

When I download from Libby, I end up with a weird ACSM file that I presume is nicely handled on Windows but on Linux it's like getting a text file with XML inside that just has a link to some adobe website. Luckily I can feed it into the tool and it will fetch it for me.

A blue screen of death takes me all afternoon to make a linux thumbdrive and boot in and fix everything very laboriously through trial and error and reading forums when it would probably take you 15 minutes tops

I also have a "fix everything very laboriously through trial and error" approach to problem solving. It does work, though 😅

  • I suspect the newer passport application processes make applying without a verified RealMe easier, so having to go to a post shop to verify your RealMe account was probably not helpful anymore. I know DIA got big money to improve the passport application processes.

Renewing your passport shouldn't be a drama. If you've ever had one (even if expired now) then you can do the renewal process and they just use facial recognition to compare against your previous passports to confirm it's you.

  • Now I think about it, I think the issue is that I cannot even obtain the DRMed eBook because I use Linux and so can't install whatever adobe software is needed. Not sure if calibre needs you to get the proper book file or not.

The server stuff is fun when it works 😅. Docker makes it low risk to just spin up a new service that looks cool, try it out, and delete it if it wasn't what you were looking for. I started on a raspberry pi, then moved to using an old laptop, and now use an old gaming PC for my personal self-hosting (mostly for the photo services, which can be resource heavy).

  • I think I saw something about DIA no longer allowing it for passport renewal.

I think that's unlikely since they are the ones pushing for its use. Perhaps it was that a verified RealMe is no longer required? Their renew passport page says you can create a RealMe during the process, which implies a verified RealMe is not required. I can't remember if it was previously required.

The distinction between RealMe as a login service and RealMe as an identity verification service is one thing I think they convey poorly. They should consider splitting these products into two separate but connected brands.

Been ages since I had to renew so I’m probably forgetting the poor customer experience part and am about to find out.

Exciting! If you already have a RealMe then the process is mostly ok. The RealMe onboarding is atrocious and the distinction between the login and verification is endlessly confusing to users (you should not need to go to a post shop to verify your identity).

DIA has done heaps to improve the passport process in recent years so hopefully it goes smoothly for you! Looking online they seem to actually be issuing passports within normal times, too! After COVID they got so many applications all at once they were taking months to issue passports.

  • Oh boy, you asked so here it comes. A summary:

    • Borrow book on Libby
    • Download adobe DRM formated book
    • Use libgourou to remove DRM and create epub
    • Import into Calibre then immediately export - just do this step for the consistent naming structure
    • Copy to server
    • Run Kavita on server for managing and reading the books

It seems there's a de-DRM plugin for Calibre but I wasn't aware of this. So I could simplify this process a bit but it works so I will probably just keep doing it 🤷

  • I went technology - > programming - > general and got suggested a Brazilian instance in Portuguese. Maybe needs a language question 😅

  • I think it's pretty normal for the wait time to be longest for the first book. Some number of people read the first one, then a smaller number are interested in the second, and an even smaller number are interested in the third. Almost no one reads the second book before the first so it's always front loaded like that.

Luckily I can strip the DRM and read it in my own time 🙂.

  • I had one just moments before posting that comment, and I've noticed significantly more of them since you mentioned it a week or two back. Not sure if it's update related or not.
