  • The government should just pass a law banning capitalism and then we wouldn't have to worry about strikes at all, but that's also never going to happen.

That doesn't mean it's a bad idea, just that it's too extreme by the standards of US politics. Unions here often still need basic protections like the right to strike at all in the first place. Check out the rules against teachers striking in Texas, they'd be banned from public sector work and lose their pensions. The only way they could possibly go on strike is with a vast enough majority to force the state government to repeal those rules.

  • Electrolytes are chemicals that can ionize to carry current. Table salt is one electrolyte, but potassium and magnesium salts are also required by the human body. Nerves work by sending electrical signals, so they need these electrolytes in order for them to carry those signals throughout the body. The problem is, the amount of electrolytes available to nerves depends on the amount present in the bloodstream, and when sweat glands pull water out of the bloodstream, they also take some electrolytes with it. That's why you need to replenish them after sweating. If you don't, your nerves won't work as well and your muscles will have a hard time coordinating. The specific ions you need to organize muscle contraction are sodium, potassium, and magnesium, so if you're low in any of those, then you risk weakness and cramps. So it's not quite as simple as just drinking table salt.

  • Yeah, I've had my LG G8 for four years now and I'm just starting to look for replacements. Unfortunately the G8 is known for the battery being very hard to replace or I would be looking into a battery replacement service instead to get a couple more years of useful life.

  • I learned in SQL class that you never ever hard delete data when there is any alternative. On Facebook and Twitter you get a whole month to change your mind before your account can't be recovered.

  • The culture war bullshit is doing significant harm to the red states. They're alienating significant segments of the population that, you know, contribute to society, and the only benefit they get in exchange is approval from conservatives, but according to polls the transphobes are a minority even within the right wing.

  • It is weird, because the entire point of racist ideology in America has historically been for personal gain by slaveowners, but now it's just objectively hurting their states' economies. Are they really getting that much benefit from exploitation like prison labor and such, or are they just so stuck in their ways that they'd rather feel powerful over others at their own expense?

  • Liftoff! @lemmy.world

  • Their whole deal with masks and vaccines is that they should have the right to decide for themselves.

Yeah, and before the Civil War the South's rhetoric was that they should have the right to decide for themselves whether to allow slavery, but if you look at the constitution of the confederacy it doesn't exactly allow the member states to choose not to allow slavery. It's all opportunistic.

  • I can't log in on my blahaj account. It gives me a little notification saying "Logged in" but then it doesn't actually log me in. My lemmy.world account still works (thankfully, because it's the only way I can figure out to report this issue) but I would like to have access to my local blahaj account as well.

edit: Either the devs fixed this extremely quickly or the problem went away on its own for some reason.
