The word "economy" can mean different things to different people.

Before Reagan became President, 'middle class' was defined as one Union job supporting a family of four. In those days $1 million was considered a vast fortune. By the time Bush Sr. left office 'middle class' meant both parents working to keep the house going and $1 million was what a rich guy paid for a party.

Benny Hill did something along these lines.

Reagan fanboys will say that the money wasn't wasted because the Soviet Union fell after Reagan forced them to spend billions to keep up with the USA.

Also, you can't parse it out, because Reagan was doing a lot of other things at the same time that cost much more money. The Savings and Loan meltdown was caused by Reagan deregulating the banks, which gave a bunch of small time idiots the right to print money.
