I still remember when my cousin first showed me this game, it was still in alpha and I think I costed like 2USD. He told me how cool it was and innovative but all I saw was the terrible graphics. Then I uttered the worst take of my life: "yeah, I don't think this will go anywhere. I doubt people will want to play this much". I have never been so wrong in my entire life.
That's why the thing being 'free' makes what they did after even worse, they committed to it and fucked up royally. And I never said 'good reviews' just well done reviews instead of using a non supported GPU and just drawing conclusions out of his ass
Good on dunkey for publishing such a good game instead of trying to profit on his popularity with mediocre one, I hope he continues giving the spotlight to more amazing indie games
The problem is that they couldn't buy it if they wanted, product wasn't release yet. This kind of review can only happen by receiving the product for free, if they weren't happy with that they shouldn't have accepted it and since they did accept then they have to make a review in due time with proper procedures then return the product (and the GPU that apparently they lost) as fast as possible.
It does make it worse because by accepting a free item they have a commitment to making at the very least a decent review, they didnt have to accept it, they could have sent it back (specially considering it was their prototype, you cannot buy a product at that stage). If they bought it and decided to shove it up their ass to test how well it cools their intestines I would find it extremely weird but fuck it, they bought it and they can do w/e they want with it.
It was a necessary "drama" imo. You mentioned the stress the team was put through but also I think Linus' ego needed to be brought down a lot. The way he talked on wan show about the cooler is like someone who thinks he is a tech god, saying something is bad is expected but outright claiming the product is worthless and will never amount to anything is just bad taste specially when you got it for free AND didn't bother testing it properly.
One can hope this situation will bring positive lasting change to the way the company is run but also the image Linus has of himself.
Thanks for confirming, I know it's true but it's funny seeing people downvote my comment as if there was an unspoken rule for speedrunners to experience the game in full before speedrunning
Your experience doesn't invalidate mine. I watch speedrun events very often and and runners will say stuff "Im not really sure why he wants to kill us but skips the entire fight with clever use of game mechanics that was the boss fight!". Many of them did play the entire game without speedrunning at first, but many dont.
I would have conflicted feelings about it if I were the devs, often speed runners even forget or don't even know the story of the game they run lol I imagine it's like spending all day cooking something really nice and your serve it to someone who absolutely loves the dish but mainly because of the plate you served it on, they come back every day to order it only to throw the food away and stare at the plate
Agreed. Had to block a friend on Facebook cause he would post updates with spoilers "wow, this part in X books where the main guy dies is amazing!". People thought I was being too extreme, maybe I should have stabbed him
