  • Russia to decriminalise domestic violence as Vladimir Putin bows to ultra-conservative pressure

    https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/russia-decriminalise-domestic-violence-vladimir-putin-ultra-conservative-family-laws-a7541371.html

    (my bold)

The new legislation marks a rapid volte-face by the Russian government. It was only in July 2016 that the Duma adopted new amendments to criminalise violence against relatives, following a recommendation by the Russian Supreme Court to decriminalise less-serious battery among general citizens but not among members of the same family.

Those measures were contested bitterly by the Russian Orthodox Church and by right-wing politicians, with senator Yelena Mizulina stating that "a man beating his wife is less offensive than when a woman humiliates a man.”

  • "Show me one saint in the history of the Church who ever blessed any kind of birth control," Father Moses says. As for masturbation - or what the church calls self-abuse - the priest condemns it as "pathetic and unmanly".

  • I did a quick search and got this:

    https://tradingeconomics.com/commodity/cocoa

Cocoa futures traded around $10,280 per tonne, their lowest in over a week and down from recent 3-1/2-month highs of $10,932 per tonne, on some profit-taking and amid expectations for favorable rain in West Africa.

so around $1.03 for 100 grams.

  • How do Marxists see the USSR, China under Mao, Hoxhua, North Korea, Pol Pot, and Sendero Luminoso?

    Let me guess:

USSR and Mao generally good, particularly given circumstances; Hoxhua who?; North Korea better than South Korea (and PRC even today is better than ROC); Pol Pot wasn't a true Scotsman; and you like at least a few RATM songs.

  • US, Canada, Australia, and most of Europe voted against censorship.

It seems Iran was absent, but Israel voted for it.

From 1939-1941 the UK fought Nazis while the USSR collaborated with them.

South Korea abstained, but North Korea voted for it, as did Myanmar.

  • It may be unintentional, or well meaning, but ultimately it does serve to apologize for fascism.

Assuming he is that bad—which again I'm not sure, though I think he is or close to it—but when someone calls me a fascist, I find it hard to take them seriously. It's like when someone accuses me of having TDS my typical reply is of course that I indeed have TDS, anybody who doesn't worship Trump has TDS.

  • IIUC, you're telling me that when it comes to Palestine, Biden is no better than Trump, or conversely, Trump is no worse than Biden.

At times I tend to agree with this, but I say it while acknowledging that I don't know everything about the issue—I am no expert on this. For all I know, Biden might be worse, or Trump might be worse; which is why I wouldn't be so quick to call someone who thinks one isn't as bad as the other an apologist for fascism. IMO, if you say that, you better know what you're talking about. You want to bash Biden or the Democrats from a leftist POV, go right on ahead, but your (apparent at least) pontificating makes you look like an elitist.
