  • Came here to say this too... I contribute a few €/£/$ per month to various projects...

I won't get all righteous here, but just because you don't have to pay, doesn't mean you to say you can't support the developer(s)...

  • Yeah +1 for Parted Magic - I've been using it for years, professionally.

Has hardware stress testing, SMART checking, etc.

It costs actual money, but that's the fee for creating the whole thing, which I'm fine with... I could make something similar with a Live USB distro (I use Arch btw), but Parted Magic can run entirely in RAM, so after booting you can remove the boot stick - useful for machines with only 1 USB port - and I've not worked out how to do that with my own DIY live distro

  • +1 for TiddlyWiki

I've been using it for years for a similar reason.

Each section (Tiddler) that you create in each wiki can be exported as a static HTML file, so if you have tables, etc, then formatting shouldn't be lost.

I use Firefox with an addon that helps to save changes (not at the desk at the mo, so can't check the name), but it works well.

  • Ah, ok... I see. I guess you've not filtering on distance then, ok. I see all my neighbours stuff on 1 sensor, so automatically started filtering (and then attempting to tune)

Good point on the negative room sensing, I think I need to start this again... but also ditch the crap module.

    Thanks

  • Noice.

But... how much faffing did you have to do to get the tuning right?

I've recently started using this and have 3 different ESP modules and I'm having a hellofatime getting them to show near-enough results, let alone accurate.

1 of them literally has the phone on top of it and it thinks it's 4m away.

I've gone upto absorbtion factor 10 (Spock) with an RSSI adjustment of 6, and that's passible on 1 device, but not another

    So... what's your secret?

  • Clonezilla has been my goto backup / restore solution for years. I've used it on everything from RaspberryPi SD Cards to a Dell Poweredge server with PERC RAID controller (because some fool setup the wrong RAID parameters).

I didn't know about Rescuezilla though... so thanks for that.

  • I think others have covered the main points, but I found it hard going for 1 device (ie a Ras Pi, VM, etc), but then it was effortless when I wanted to add a 2nd (or more...), so at first pick the sensible uses, then consider ansible for that one-off device a little later...

I like a few specific utils (tmux, nmon, htop) on all my devices: ansible script

I want to update all the Ras Pis in the house: ansible script

    You get the picture...

  • Can Immich just leave my photos alone in their current location / folder structure, or does it take over and mangle it all up?

I'm fairly happy with my photo storage structure, but would like the features of Immich...

  • Originally the ability to find specific files by name - Joplin was storing with filenames in(I forget exactly) date or serial number...

But, more importantly it was the dynamic bi-directional links that you can just type and creates a new page, and that page shows all the references pointing to it.

I use this for work, so each day's journal has meetings with subjects... go to that subject's page and there are all the meetings I had.

  • Hmm, I'm in a very similar situation... I think a few people use the calendar in Thunderbird for example, but I don't use an email client.

What I've found that works well enough for me is the calendar in Vivaldi - I can see multiple calendars (ie other family members) Work, etc... so far it's done me well.
