  • You don't need to live in Sweden to be aware of the significant issues they're having with gang violence and it's not native Swedes these gangs are made of. I live in Finland and Yle, which is the Finnish equivalence of BBC makes news about this weekly and they're by no means a site known to spread right wing propaganda so I don't see a reason to assume any bias there.

  • A common definition of consciousness is that it's the fact that there's something it's like to be. It's the ability to have a subjective experience. I think it's a safe assumption that the brain is responsible for the emergence of consciousness, but I wouldn't necessarily say it's located in the brain. It's not really located anywhere. That's kind of like saying that waves are at the surface of the ocean when, in fact, they're indistinguishable from each other. Your entire sense of existence is an appearance in consciousness. The feeling that it's located behind your face is just another wave on the ocean.

  • I don't think there's any reason to assume there's something that it's like to be an individual cell. Consciousness probably needs a certain level of ability to process information for it to emerge, and I doubt cells reach this level. I mean, they could, but I wouldn't make that assumption.

  • My reasons for being on Twitter haven't really changed since I created my account in 2014. When they killed 3rd party apps, I started using it exclusively via a browser, but other than that, I haven't noticed much change. My experience of Twitter is basically the same as it has always been, and who the owner is doesn't really concern me. I didn't pay much attention to what Jack Dorsey was doing then, and I don't pay much attention to Elon now either, except for the news I'm forcibly fed about him on Lemmy. On Twitter, I can at least mute him, as I did ages ago.

I can't really relate to the complaints I read from people about Twitter. My feed is highly curated, and it's 98% stuff I'm interested in, with the rest being random memes and cat videos, pretty much.

  • Most people in jail for abusing children are not pedophiles, but normal rapists and kids unfortunelately just happen to be easy targets. Even most pedophiles have morals. They know what they like is wrong and they wouldn't want to hurt anyone. Just like most men aren't rapists despite being turned on by women.

Just imagine being born as someone with these urges. What a shitty fucking hand you've been dealt and as if that's not bad enough, people want to murder you just for coming out and asking for help.

  • r/zombiesurvivaltactics was a nice place for serious conversation about imaginary scenarios.

r/SamHarris was a great place for rational and intellectual discussion overall. People on that sub were significantly more measured and considerate with other people even about stuff they disagreed with than people on reddit in general.

  • When you buy a house, you're essentially locking in your housing costs, which can be especially advantageous if you have a fixed-rate mortgage. Rent, on the other hand, can increase over time. My monthly mortgage payment for a house is already several hundreds less than what my friends are paying for their tiny rental apartments. In about 17 years, my house will be paid off, and then I'll only have maintenance and utility bills remaining, while my friends will still be paying rent, which probably has increased by quite a lot by that time. I don't need to sell my house to benefit from investing into it.

  • House is an investment even if you build it entirely by yourself from materials harvested and processed by you. You invest a chunk of your time and effort to build something you expect to "pay you back" in the future, eg. keep you dry and warm when it's cold outside.

  • That's why I bought a house instead of renting. One day it will be paid off, and from that on, as long as I keep paying the property tax nobody can kick me out. They can cut my water and electrcity, but the house and the plot remains mine.

  • I'm not planning on moving so it doesn't really matter what my house is worth. It was relatively cheap to begin with; 105k€. My monthly payment for the mortage is 520€ while the rent my friends are paying is usually 700€/month or more. That would cover my water and electricity bill aswell and I'd still have money left over.

  • Everything they think or due is driven by hate.

That's not very far off from politically active people in general nowdays, especially on social media. People seem much more willing to bond over the common hatred of an outgroup, rather than mutual love for something. I mean, here we are shitting on the republican party on a heavily left leaning forum with daily threads about Twitter, Reddit, Elon, Spez, Google, Billionaires, Capitalism etc. Very rarely I see as passionate discussions about common projects we're all equally excited about.
