  • I have eaten ice cream outside when temperatures were sub-zero Fahrenheit. It's not something I do regularly but it's happened and will probably happen again.

If I want ice cream, then I want ice cream. No other considerations matter.

  • Yes. The flame is a cloud of gas and particulate heated to the point that it glows. It will reflect light. Just not a lot, and it's also emitting enough light to overpower any reflected light in most conditions.

And of course the candle itself reflects light.

  • Natural monopolies have nothing to do with natural resources. They exist when the barrier to entering a specific market is fundamentally high enough that it's unreasonable to expect anyone to be able to enter the market and compete against an established player.

A couple of good examples would be utilities and ISPs.

I did not remember correctly, kind of. From AOSP, Android 7 and later use file-based encryption (FBE) rather then full-disk encryption (FDE). FBE is dependant on verified boot, which itself requires a locked bootloader.

Custom ROMs may have back ported FDE, modified FBE, or implemented their own encryption.

  • It is largely an anti-tampering measure. Without it you could have things injected into the system. For example, a stalker could install a hidden tracking program as a service and then return your phone without you knowing.

Iirc it's also a prerequisite for full-disk encryption on modern android. So, without it your user data is available to be dumped in an unencrypted state. Most phone thieves are interested in reselling the phone, so they're provably not going to go through the effort and risk damage to the phone just to dump encrypted data from the chips directly. However, if it's just available unencrypted from fastboot why not dump it? They could get info that could be used to blackmail or scam you or people you know. Or they could just sell the data.

  • I doubt it will be climate change specifically. I think it will be the increasing political divisiveness. It'll be a whole bunch of different issues, climate change included, that neither political party can agree on the reality of, much less how to address them that will continue to escalate tensions between the two major political parties until we reach the point of a second civil war.

I think America is less than 50 years away from that point. The path we're on ends in war. Who knows if our country will survive.

  • If it weren't for your retropie post and the fact that she's gone no-contact with our dad, I'd question if you were my sister, because this sounds like something she'd do with almost the same family size/relative ages.

  • If you find the right spot they can be, just probably not anywhere that close to shore.

Though if you were dressed like that in a little rubber raft on any part of Alaska's coast you'd probably be hypothermic or on your way to it. The ocean's may be warming but the water is still damn cold even in the middle of summer.
