  • How long until Tim Cook offers Trump a bribe to reduce tariffs?

    I'm guessing two weeks.

  • It's so hard to believe that this actor would grow up to play Saul Berenson in Homeland.

  • I feel like that's just urls but with extra steps!

  • Ah the classic Republican thinking "If we can't stop it, we'll make it impossible."

Worked with abortion and now they are doing it on science.

In response to the influx of grassroots air monitoring, Louisiana’s Legislature passed the Community Air Monitoring Reliability Act, or CAMRA, which requires that community groups that monitor pollutants “for the purpose of alleging violations or noncompliance” of federal law must follow EPA standards, including approved equipment that can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Maybe, just maybe, if you have a ton of grassroots air quality monitoring, you might have air quality issues. 🤷‍♂️

  • Of the schools that can afford to mount a defense, it's Harvard.

  • In either case it's supportive.

Entire family is goth except him: be yourself, even if it "ruins" the picture.

Entire family pretends to be goth except him: this will be so funny to everyone who knows us!

  • Ooh I LOOOOOVE Trump!!!! That's a totally normal thing to say about a politician! You know who else can say that? No one. Not even the best Biden fans...you know he doesn't have fans? Can you believe that?

I love Trump so much I have bought his sneakers, his steaks, his socks, his hats, his shirts, his jorts, his truck decals, his crypto, his dolls, his sunglasses, his guns, his ammo...in fact, I've gone into debt just to buy more of his merch. You know who else has that? No one.

  • Banning religion is never going to happen under this constitution.

After the civil war that we're all barrelling towards, absolutely.

  • According to Microsoft’s official developer documentation, setting the correct Digital Rights Management (DRM) flag on the application window will ensure that “content won’t show up in Recall or any other screenshot application.”

So I'm guessing that VLC will have a feature flag to enable or disable this setting. Then you play Disney movies that you pirated on loop. Let the lawyers sort it out.

  • Linux doesn't protect you from other people you're having conversations with.

  • I skimmed through their paper and I can't seem to find the instructions to download the dataset.

    I found this particularly cute:

This study introduces the Discord Unveiled Dataset, a comprehensive and ethically curated resource encompassing over 3,000 public servers and 2 billion messages exchanged on Discord.

  • The easiest way is by keeping in contact with your co-workers. Doesn't mean you need to hang out with them but just talk to them, get their personal numbers, etc. But if you want to hang out with them, do so.

It also helps to be the change you want to see. So if someone comes to you for help with a job or something like that, help them. If you have a job opening, reach out to your network first.

The second easiest way is by going to local meetups. Get to know the hosts as well as the attendees. Build these connections before you are searching and again, help out folks who are looking as well.

The hardest way is to cold-call people, even those you've worked with or had a relationship with. If you have to do this, do it. But try to establish some sort of connection before asking them for referrals.

  • You got to network. I say that as a deep introvert but I just entered the job market and reached out to my network one on one for recommendations and job postings.

I hate that I have to do that but it's the best way to get a job.

  • So it's a bit more complicated than that.

I believe it was Warner Brothers who held the copyright but it had been disputed whether they actually owned the rights. But it's one of those situations where taking them to court to find out was going to cost a lot more than paying the license.

WB didn't have to prove they owned it to get people to pay. They only needed to show that they held the copyright to it and the history of other people paying did the rest. Sort of like paying protection to a local mob.

So when WB finally got sued and they had to show receipts, the judge decided against them and we got something in the public domain.

  • I go for a good enough solution. I know better solutions exist but I'm limited by time and empathy.

  • Super dumb question here: what constitutional power does DOGE actually have? Musk wasn't confirmed. The department wasn't officially created nor was it funded in any fashion. The Department isn't part of the presidential succession plan.

Outside of the fact that 47 has allowed it to exist, what power do they weld besides vibes?

  • They released their code as MIT which is far more permissive than I was expecting. I was expecting some sort of proprietary license.

But they need to keep doing stuff like this. Devcontainers for VS Code is still proprietary and keeps me from running codium.
