It will depend on the media. If the media makes this into something bigger than Watergate, that's what it will be. People usually aren't cognizant of how much their thoughts on things are shaped by the narrative our media tells.

The media reporting alone creates this sort of assumption that something is important to everyone else. If you think all your fellow group members are feeling a certain way, you will try to feel that way. As that happens to enough people it creates a real trend in the herd with momentum.
