  • For anyone who doesn't know, there's a whole genre of television (as I understand it) affectionately called K-Dramas that come out of South Korea. I've only watched Vincenzo myself, but my partner has been addicted for most of this year so I've seen bits and pieces, and honestly...they're really, really good junky tv. Junky in the sense that they brazenly use a lot of cliches and liberally run aground of logic for the sake of better spectacle or happier outcomes. But I feel like American TV sucks at that kind of thing these days, and it's really entertaining.

And there are (probably) hundreds of these shows on Netflix, with a super passionate fanbase. South Korea is unbelievably prolific and the shows have really high production values, great performances, and a lot of heart. They deserve a lot of recognition (and compensation).

  • Ellis on X reposted Trump ally Matt Schlapp, who suggested that other GOP presidential candidates drop out of the Republican primary so that party members can use donations for legal defenses.

What a world. Lawyer for former president of the united states calls on his competing candidates to voluntarily abort their campaigns, so he can better raise funds not for his own campaign, but to pay the unrelated legal fees of the co-conspirators who helped him attempt a coup in the last election that he lost!

This is a real thing that's actually happening.

  • Me neither, but I'm honestly not sure. I got sick a month or two ago, mostly just felt like aches and fatigue, pretty much no respiratory element at all. Except I lost 80%-ish of my sense of smell and taste until earlier this week (if it's even fully recovered, I'm honestly not sure).

Was that COVID? I didn't test positive for it, but maybe I waited too long to think to do it. I wish I knew for sure.

  • This is the first I've heard anyone suggest that Musk's changes at Twitter somehow improved "the actual experience of what it's supposed to do." Although the "x through the administrative state" line proves this is pure, gutless pandering.

So as usual, he's not actually as stupid as he sounds, just opportunistic and immoral.

  • If only we, collectively, as humans were better at comprehending catastrophe on long-term scales. This should be incredibly alarming. But because it's still snowing in D.C. winters (Inhofe 😡), we, collectively, still just don't care.

  • Outer Wilds is a masterpiece, but based on this comment about Subnautica, be warned that it also doesn't make clear what you're supposed to do. Unlike Subnautica though, there are no menial tasks to keep up with once you figure it out.

Just don't be afraid to check a walkthrough to give you a boost if you need it (but also don't rely on one, the joy of exploration and discovery is the best part!).

  • “For the last 30 years, as far as the records I’ve been able to find, the justices have been writing the same boilerplate language in their Senate Judiciary questionnaires, which to me is an indictment against the seriousness with which they take their ethical responsibilities,” said Gabe Roth, executive director of Fix the Court.

It's not his fault, he was just copying the empty promises all the other nominees were making.

  • the people who tend to do it are acting in bad faith, and whose actual beef is that he’s not simping for genocidal dictators

I hesitated even challenging for exactly this reason. I want people who do good things to be empowered to continue doing them. And I completely agree with you that people who've survived incarceration and paid that penalty have a fundamental right to a blank slate return to normal life. But I feel like the establishment of a public persona can change that dynamic slightly. From the video that @FlowVoid@midwest.social helpfully provided, it seems like his current work is maybe partially focused on deradicalization, which requires some degree of trustworthiness and credibility. Honestly, I think his past could enhance that work if he was open about it and integrated it into his approach.

Ultimately, you're right. He's "paid his dues" as far as society is concerned and has no real obligation to put that stuff on display if he doesn't want to. But I also think it's fair to be a little skeptical; we can only make inferences about other people's character and intentions, and this is naturally a factor for that inference. I'll end with this note, though: it's obvious that he garners a lot of respect for what he's doing with these videos, so I'm confident I'll find that his good character is plenty apparent through his actions now. Time to watch some videos and prove it to myself.

  • The offender in the comments is obviously overzealous, and I'm not familiar with "Beau", but I did some searching and it...kinda does seem like he deserves some accountability.

I see he served some time, but is it true he's never publicly addressed this in his Beau role? Cause when someone is trying to amend for past misdeeds, I tend to think there's an obligation to be honest and transparent about those misdeeds.

Details here (search for Justin King): https://www.dcjs.virginia.gov/sites/dcjs.virginia.gov/files/publications/victims/florida-strategic-plan-human-trafficking.pdf

  • I'm honored! I do hope you enjoy Hollow Knight, it really is a standout.

That's the thing about Kena, everything feels slower and less responsive than I've come to expect from other games. Parrying is weird too because it does this camera...jolt to focus on the enemy you parried, but it's more like a cut than a pan, so it's really jarring for my brain and requires a moment of readjustment each time.

  • I fucking loved playing as a Great Old One Warlock in 5e. Eldritch Blast with Agonizing Blast (I assume that's an option in BG3?) is so versatile. Maybe I'm just easily persuaded because now I'm leaning toward Warlock again lol.

How is it for role-playing? I think that was my favorite part with the character I had.

  • I just finished Hollow Knight this week (basic ending, didn't go out of my way to find items I didn't organically come across). Metroidvanias and 2d side-scrollers in general haven't traditionally been my thing, but I was persuaded by Monty Zander's video and...yeah, it's as good as everyone says. The world is surprisingly immersive for its format and the gameplay is tight and rewarding. Abilities and enemy variety were always changing the way I played, and the different areas each had their own identities and obstacles. The sense of excitement on unlocking a new area and getting to explore it was on par with Elden Ring.

Unfortunately, I moved on to Kena Bridge of Spirits, which I think is a pretty good game so far, but it has some AA jank that I think stands out more after the fine tuning in Hollow Knight, and the combat is a lot more rote. Trying not to be too harsh though because not everything can be what Hollow Knight is, obviously.

  • Right? Ranger is probably at the bottom of my list just cause in 5e (as has been noted everywhere else), it seems to lack its own identity. If you're familiar with those rules, do you feel like BG3 does anything to make the Ranger more worthwhile than the tabletop version?
