  • Reminds me of TERFs/FARTs saying the "science" agrees with them (ie "lies we tell to children so they understand the basics"), meanwhile every actual geneticist, doctor, etc is like "keep that word out of your lying gullet"

  • People arguing he shouldn't be prosecuted is wild, like we've been so cowed into submission by this dumpster fire of an electoral system that we're afraid to prosecute high treason because otherwise the treasonist might win

  • I use rechargeable interchangeable batteries wherever I can, but I recently ran into some issues with an ultra-cheap BDC "massage" pillow. The OCP in the batteries was getting triggered and the motor would stop and start spinning for 10 seconds at a time. Tried to add small value resistors and capacitors to it but nothing worked and I had to get a pack of alkaline. Only now do I remember I have a bunch of spare 18650s and USB battery charging boards that I could've retrofitted!

  • I'm not questioning the legitimacy of the indictment, I'm wondering why it took so long to indict such a serious offense. Even the Republican senators were in danger, so I don't get why neither party pushed for it harder.

  • Social and conversational engines (think Stardew Valley or Animal Crossing) tend to make me feel a lot lonelier than straight NPC dialogue. I think it's because NPCs are shallow enough that I don't see them as people, just people-shaped quest dispensers, but when you add social systems on top they're inevitably going to fall short and that friend-shape turns into an NPC and my brain realizes I was playing alone the whole time. I'm really looking forward to the integration of language models into games so I can actually socialize with these characters, even when they're more shallow than real people.

  • Weapon durability becomes a lot more bearable when you streamline the decision-making process to "do I want this stick" and "which stick do I want the least to make room for this new stick" and/or treat it as an exercise in zen. Leave your burdens at the shore of the dao, dear Bandicoot.

  • Biden has been such a confusing figure for me. On the one hand he's supported some horrible things ("fund the police", continued border camps/deportation, strike breaking, etc) but on the other hand he's managed to organize some enormous, desperately needed legislation that's both boring and rarely reported and I only heard about when my sister (a senator's aid) told us about it:

    • Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act - $1T bill to be rolled out over 10 years
    • Inflation Reduction Act - $369B climate investment bill
    • Student loan forgiveness (blocked by DOJ)

But all I ever hear about is "sleepy Joe" being incompetent and tripping over his words. Dude needs to fire his PR team, because as much as I disagree with him he's actually really successful at the sort of boring political and financial administration that politics needs to be. Meanwhile, Trump's been building his cult and will probably win 2024, roll back all that progress, start a mini-holocaust for LGBTQIA+, and become "benevolent" dictator-president for life because Biden isn't "sexy" enough.

  • I think they're talking about the post-GamerGate anti-SJW movement where atheist youtubers converted to debunking straw-feminists. Maybe they've gotten out of that pipeline but haven't internalized that those "bad" feminists were caricatures of their actual positions or cherry-picked crazies?

  • Considering they let the air out of the tires and left a polite finger-wagging note, I don't think they skipped the gentle reminder phase.

Daily reminder that property damage is not violence, but random acts of property damage isn't the same thing as genuine activism. We must be mindful of the purpose of a political act, and whether the act actually accomplishes that purpose. What is the purpose of inconveniencing random SUV owners? Will this affect any change, or will it merely entrench people's existing attitudes?

Imo if you're gonna slash tires, do it to the politicians. More news coverage, clearer message, and you don't come off as petty against people for having the "wrong" kind of social performance (eg driving an SUV instead of an electric) and trivialize the issue.

  • To what end? Do SUV owners write bills? Will inconveniencing nonpolitical randos get anyone talking about the issues, let alone talking about them without souring the discussion for climate activists, who now look like vindictive assholes?

This reads like petty vengeance against people with marginally larger carbon footprints and with the wrong kind of social performance, not genuine activism. If you're gonna slash tires, do it to the politicians ffs.

  • This, the intent would be a lot more clear if they eg did it to politicians who supported anti-climate bills. That sends a much more powerful message, whereas targeting random SUVs isn't likely to get anyone talking or caring about the issues.
