  • Where did I say that you have to participate in the conflict to discuss it?

I said that you should have good knowledge on a subject before you make claims about it. Something that you have not done, so I doubt you’re a “historian”. I am also not accusing everyone here of being an armchair general. I’m accusing you of being one because of your poor take on the conflict.

What connection do you have to the Afghan conflict other then 2 YouTube videos and reading the Wikipedia article?

Also I don’t really understand what you’re saying in your last point. I apologize if English isn’t your first language, but the last sentence makes little sense and I don’t get what you’re saying I should do. Are you saying I should write a blog about Azov or the Donetsk militias? Why would I want to do that?

  • Ok? The extremists are still getting help from the US in this situation

Also that is not why they lost. Newsflash, war is unpopular, and having convoy after convoy of caskets return home is very bad for morale. Soviet production was not up to the task. The war was unpopular to begin with and the population could care less about Afghanistan. The military was unprepared for a COIN conflict in the Middle East, and etc.

  • The Soviets would not have won if it hadn’t been for Gorbachev. That is an extremely historically disconnected take, and I recommend you study the conflict better.

Also it doesn’t matter if there is apathy, guns will be sent as long as they can, and a terrorist organization doesn’t need much to work off of.

But don’t worry “just one more year and it’ll be over” right?

My grandfather thought the same thing before he and his Mi-24 were shot down in Afghanistan.

  • Would Korea not be considered a conventional military conflict between roughly equally matched opponents?

  • Extremely unlikely. It will at best hold onto a never ending stalemate, and at worst devolve into a loosely federated terrorist state that will fight till the last man.

This will be Afghanistan all over again. There will be no victory here.

  • The name is officially the "Government of Niger", as they anticipated problems with Nigeria having a very similar name.

  • The unemployment statistic is not counting children who are students, that itself is a misrepresentation.

Full time students are excluded from unemployment metrics. This is counting people 16 and up who are not in school or college.

  • Unemployment is counted from 16, but full time students are not counted in unemployment statistics, both high school and college. No unemployment statistic is counting 17 year old high school students.

    That seems reasonable to do.

  • There is a reason warlords and ISIS use Toyota trucks. I’m pretty sure you could run those over with a tank and they would still run fine for 400k miles.

The Japanese car in our family is an absolute workhorse that was driving 15k a year and it is still going strong 16 years into its life with 250k miles.

  • Kids have always wanted to be famous actors, rockstars, authors, and celebrities.

Nowadays that’s just in the online sphere.

    Nothing has changed

  • Yeah, but that’s still pre-judgement day. TSCC was a wonderful show and I loved it, but I’ve had enough pre-judgement day terminator material.

I want to see the future war. Either early future war (2005-2020) or the closing days of the war 2028-2029).I want to see Humanity’s War with SkyNet. I want to see the violent struggle between Conner and the machines. I want to see the machines rearm, field new technology, and grow more powerful in the face of a desperate last stand human resistance that is barely struggling to stay alive. I want to see the machines themselves grow more and more desperate, genocidal, and destructive as Conner’s leadership grows from a thorn in SkyNet’s side to a threat that is posed to exterminate the machines, to ultimately a fighting force that puts Skynet in a desperate defense before being ultimately overrun and destroyed as Conner leads the final offensive against its brain in the Cheyenne Mountain NORAD base.

That’s what I want to see.

I don’t want to see Arnold or Sarah Conner for the 15th time running around trying to prevent Judgement Day and surviving against time traveling assassins.

  • Terminator Salvation.

It did not deserve the hate it got, and could have a been a great reboot for the series.

I thought they pulled off the “early future war” aspect pretty well. Conner is still young and not the brilliant general as he would be in 2029, the machines are still recovering from the nuclear exchange so their reach and power is limited as compared to the lines of tanks we see in the opening of T2, and the technology, feel, and atmosphere feels realistic and fresh.

I wanted to see more in the universe, but people whined that it wasn’t a masterpiece like T2, and there was no Arnold, so instead we got the flaming dogshit that was Genysis and whatever the newest one is called.

  • 8 years is considering that you drive 20,000 miles a year and that the car will break down at 150,000.

The vast majority of modern cars of decent quality can easily go ~250,000 miles, and I’ve rarely ever met anyone that’s driven more then 10,000 miles a year.

That means you can probably squeeze a good 15-20 years out of a modern car based on how well you take care of it and how much you drive.

  • Evan’s was about to out of sheer depression after learning that the “revolution” was manufactured as population control, but after he sees that child slaves are used to man the train, he turns on the old guy, kills him, and sacrifices himself for the greater good.

He gives the grenade to the Korean man and sacrifices his arm to rescue the slave child manning the engine. Then he covers the boy’s body with his own (and the Korean man does the same to the girl), as the grenade in the engine explodes and destroys the train.

Hence the “Nice” from the capitalist since he legitimately was not expecting Evans to refuse his offer and destroy the train.

  • Saskatchewan and Manitoba 😭

Awwwww hell naw. Pretty sure everyone there is suicidal and desperately trying to escape. Not to mention that 98% of the population is all concentrated in Winnipeg since the rest is an Arctic tundra and impenetrable pine forests.

  • Yeah, 500k might get you further in bumfuck nowhere, but good luck finding a grocery store, hospital, or job within 50 miles of you.

Your closest neighbor will also probably be Blind Terry who fought in Korea and is very racist.

  • Pennsylvania, depends on what you’d like exactly. Small city? Lancaster fits the bill perfectly. Big city? You have Pittsburg. Massive city? Philadelphia.

I’d vouch for Lancaster though, it’s very blue, very diverse, the area is on the cheaper side; and the city is thriving and growing extremely well. It’s a quaint little city. Further you get access to the absolutely gorgeous Appalachia with just a 20min-1 hour drive to various breathtaking national parks, state parks, lakes, mountains, and game lands.

The city is very walkable and is mainly pedestrian focused with a pretty good public transit system. Everyone also bikes everywhere and they are more common then cars. There are also several colleges and the historical Franklin and Marshall College so the area is maintained well and looked after.

Plenty of houses and apartments for less then 500k and the vast majority of the market is under 800k with not many outliers.

Climate is temperate year round, you have access to a major city as Philly is 1 hour away, there are scenes for pretty much anything, LGBT? Check. Art? Check. Film? Check. Alcohol? Check. Politics? Check. There’s something for every hobby.

Due to Franklin and Marshall and several companies there is a decently sized programmer, streamer, Youtuber, and computer scene as well since you might be interested in that.

The broadband and internet infrastructure is also very good and you can have direct access to fiber ground wire if you pay, so internet speeds can be lightening fast.

It honestly ticks all your boxes!

  • Uhhhhh, there would most definitely be a fight. I don’t think Smith would be to friendly with Marx seeing as how Smith’s writings created the literal foundation of classical liberalism and capitalism. Rational self interest, competition leads to progress, free hand of the market, all of those are concepts that Marx explicitly denies and are directly in opposition to dialectical materialism.

Smith might be interested in hearing Marx out, but he would have disagreed with the vast majority of Marx’s points and economic theories.

  • Maybe, but it feels a bit hopeful.

They kill the capitalist at the end and destroy the entire horrific system. Further it was assumed that life was unable to survive at all in the wasteland, though we see polar bears in the distance which proves that be false seeing as there must be an ecosystem to support them. So to me it feel like the children climbing out the wreckage comes across as a hopeful message of “Good men plant trees they will never sit under. Destroy the system for the good of and future survival of humanity.

Assuming it didn’t immediately maul them because polar bears hunt humans, seeing the polar bear is a MASSIVE hope. Large predators in an ecosystem require an immense amount of calories and ecological support, so if it could survive in the wastes for 14 years, it can be assumed that there are probably seals, and algae in the water, or other land animals, and so on.

  • Everything you described is just capitalism.

Governments have never “just let business fail” because under capitalism and its drive to consolidate and monopolize, the government will become an arm of corporate power. The weak and corrupt politicians are by design. The corporate welfare is by design.

This has been been seen throughout the history of capitalism and is the logical conclusion to its processes and theories. If you have a system based on infinite growth and profit seeking, the system will always devolve to exploitation, monopoly, and government control. Why? Because it’s profitable.

The very foundation that corporations working in their self interest will be a benefit to society is rotten, and has been shown to never work time and time again.

The only progress we have seen has come from public endeavors, independent actors, and the people. Never corporations. Only thing we get from corporations is 35 different types of Oreos and 20 different types of toothpaste all owned by the same company.
