Unfortunately our democracy is flawed, and our election system punishes similar candidates who run against each other in the general election.

Because of this, our political parties are more like coalitions, made up various groups with overlapping goals, who choose one candidate through a primary, so that they don’t cannibalize each other in the general election.

This means that those who run third party anyway are either looking for publicity, cynically playing the spoiler, or fools.

I’m sure the people on the right — who already actively engage in suppressing the vote of people who do want to vote — will feel deeply concerned about the legitimacy of their increased power due to people on the left deciding not to vote.

And I’m sure the Democrats, who will then have even less power in the federal government, will somehow use their non-power to pass laws to make things better in order to woo these non-voters who have proven their unreliability.

Wouldn’t that give an extra incentive to raise the retirement age?

The level of betrayal it would take for my wife to do something like this when I am a Supreme Court justice, knowing the political significance it would have, would be off the charts.

This is not simply be a case of “my wife and I don’t agree on everything and we don’t keep tabs on everything”. This is one of 9 people in the entire country appointed to one of the most powerful positions for life, and who, if they have the slightest bit of integrity and respect for the power entrusted to them, should be striving to show a significant level of nonpartisanship. Yes, this is a sacrifice. It’s the job.

I don’t know how I could possibly remain married to someone who would sell me out like that — make it appear that I was supporting insurrectionists. But we know it wasn’t a betrayal, and that he was showing support for them, and saying his wife did it is a convenient way to signal to the bad people while hand-waving away anybody who calls him out.

So, if you study a map of a building, noticing that it has a kitchen at a certain place, then in go inside the building (without the map), and someone says "go to the kitchen," how do you know where the kitchen is? How do you imagine the paths, rooms, hallways to follow?

I know this isn’t true of everybody with alphantasia, but what I do in this situation is I get lost. I can’t visualize walking through the space while I study the map, and I can’t bring the map to mind when I'm actually there. Some people with aphantasia have no trouble finding their way around, so I think in my case it must be that I’m missing some innate sense of direction as well that visualization might have helped me to compensate for, if only I could.

Correct. I’m not 100% on the aphantasia spectrum, so if I think about it then I might get the briefest flash of some dog, like an afterimage at best, and I can’t hold it in my mind, or manipulate it, or see any details or color. It’s not even really a complete outline or anything either that flashes for that quarter-second.

When I read a book, I don’t know what the characters or places look like. But I have always been able to draw really well. So it’s really a mystery how this all works.

Some people can’t picture an item in their head, or can barely do so and wouldn’t be able to flip it.

I agree with the part about big corporations not actually caring about it, and that both the decision to stock and the decision not to stock are made cynically by a company like Target.

What I don’t agree with is that getting mad about not having Pride stuff is equivalent to getting mad about not having Super Bowl stuff. Football fans are not an oppressed segment of society that has feared harassment and violence. There is not a constant threat of legislation aimed at harming their community. It’s also not important that football fandom is normalized by society at large.

So even if we were talking about the Super Bowl, if 5-10% of people in the UK actually were American football fans, and were under constant threat by UK society, then it would be completely understandable to get mad at Target for being cynical about even that! Indeed, I guarantee in those places where Target isn’t carrying pride stuff, there are LGBTQ+ people living there.

While I agree about reclaiming the word, what OP is talking about is not what a reclaimed word accomplishes. A reclaimed word is about empowerment within the group. OP is talking about selling the concept to the public at large. I think if people in the filesharing community want to use the reclaimed word “piracy” in private then they should go right ahead. But if someone has the goal of viewing this as a justified act, then calling it “piracy” in public spaces undermines that.
