As much as it pains me to say it, the Switch 2's short battery life is a real bummer

I've probably talked more about XV than any other supposedly bad game, so maybe I've developed some sort of Stockholm Syndrome. But for an objectively pretty bad game I enjoyed parts of it and it did elicit emotions out of me at times.
The game has many problems, but maybe the biggest is the huge overambitious "multi-media experience" they attempted. The game itself suffers because its content is spread so thin as it's stretched out over a movie and a comic and the DLCs and I don't remember what else. An anime? Even the Royal Edition still suffers for not integrating the DLCs, and it's kind of awkward to have to stop playing at the appropriate times to go so the DLCs for the maximum impact. And even then the planned Lunafreya DLC would have added so much to the story, but they never got around to that as the game flopped (in large parts because crucial story elements were scheduled for fucking DLCs instead of included in the game!)
I do agree that the combat is fun, and they did have a really good vibe going with the bros and the road trip. There are some really nice heartfelt moments where the game shines. And the fishing minigame is absolute top drawer, one of the best in gaming. But ultimately I look at it as a huge pile of wasted potential.
Absolutely gorgeous music though, some really powerful leitmotif work like Sunset Waltz/Valse di Fantastica and Ardyns themes.
I'm back on my first playthrough of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided after a two-month break for Blue Prince, Clair Obscur and F.E.A.R.. It's a great game, but I think I did it a disservice by taking the long break, I can feel I'm so much less invested now than I was when I began playing it.
It's very unfortunate that the series ended on a cliffhanger, what they have here is really good and in many ways an upgrade on Human Revolution. A third game from the studio would have been a true masterpiece, I think.
He does deserve that, but I wish the single biggest modding hub on the internet and a load bearing pillar of an entire gaming culture wasn't sold off to an unnamed party with no transparency and only vague reassurances that "nothing will change".
What with the late stage capitalist society we're living in, I've been conditioned to think that good things being sold off rarely amounts to good things.
Let's hope this is one of the few exceptions.
God damnit we just can't have nice things.
Even though Greedfall is hardly a great game I think it has too much charm to really fit here. I found it too memorable to really be a "mediocre slop" contender.
I said any Call of Duty from the past decade as answer to the original comment, and I still think that is a solid candidate. However, another game I played recently that qualifies I think is Sleeping Dogs. Perfectly cromulent 7/10 GTA clone but ultimately not pulling up any trees.
Bruh, FFTA is a great game and I will hear no slander of it.
I don't get why some people are saying this was a boring race. Yes, the first ten laps or so were pretty eventless (excluding lap one of course) but as the tire situation started manifesting itself it turned into a very interesting strategy race. We had several split strategies across the grid, it was unclear for the longest time whether the one or two-stop would be faster, and there were even the various ways of slicing the MHH pie throwing it up in the air. Besides George having the win on lock the rest of the podium was wide open even as late as the safety car.
George was impressive this whole weekend of course, but I was actually almost equally impressed by Antonelli holding off the McLarens at the end. Otherwise Kimi again showed he has a ways to go to match Russel (especially on tire management), but holding off faster cars under pressure for lap after lap without making a single mistake was hugely impressive for a still 18-year-old boy. Great to see him get a good result after a couple of unlucky races. His post-race radios were heartwarming.
I really don't know what to make of Ferrari. Lewis hit a groundhog and Leclerc will probably go hit his pitwall but in the end P5/6 feels like where they should be right now. Maybe they're in that no man's land now where nothing they do really matters. Hamilton had one of the loneliest drives of all time out there, just miles off everyone in front and behind at times. Which is good for the memes I suppose as they can keep pitting into traffic and fumbling strategy without needing to learn and improve.
Also gotta mention Hulk and Alonso getting huge points today. That Aston finally looks like it's not dogwater and Alonso is waking up again and showing he's still got some drive in him. I think he got the most overtakes today (though granted they were predominantly DRS passes down the straights as usual around here) and he got absolutely everything out of that car (with no help from the team it appears as he was outright fighting his engineer today and apparently "flying blind"). Hulk drove well too, but hit the one-stop strategy home run along with the other midfield drivers attempting it.
Driver of the day I want to say Alonso because I love him. But really, the lap one overtake and the defense at the and makes it hard to give it to anyone but Antonelli.
EDIT: Somehow forgot to mention the McLaren incident. Norris has to be the most frustrating driver to watch on the grid right now. On pure pace he still has the edge on Oscar (though only just), but it's just... literally everything else. He needs to get a mental coach immediately, or if he has one then fire them and get a better one. You will never win a championship if this is how you drive under pressure.
These posts are some of the best content on Lemmy and bring me back to the early 00s days of reading the physical PC Gamer magazines in all their glory.
This is a great initiative.
Williams have a long and storied history of low-drag design concepts, which plays well at Montreal. I thought Vowles had said they would try to move away from that to more all-round performing cars, but perhaps they haven't entirely yet.
I knew what that video was before even clicking the link. Great insight into the horrible people ruining the games industry.
Great article. The entangling web of endless progression systems is one piece, but one thing they failed to mention is time gating and daily quests. It's very important for these games to force you to play a little bit every day, instead of in large chunks all at once. This helps move the game subconsciously in your brain from "a game" to "a habit/a hobby", and that makes your purchasing decisions very different.
Salt and pepper beard and moustache Padre god damn 😳
I played through F.E.A.R. and its first expansion Extraction Point this week for the first time, and I've been advised to leave the series be there. Having watched some video reviews on the following games I can see why. It's a damn shame too what happened to the series, because F.E.A.R. 1 and EP are so damn good.
For a 20-year-old game it looks unbelievably good. It must have been mind blowing back in 2005. The particle effects and light destructibility of the environments still look great, the slow-mo is cinematic and the lighting in general is very well done. The art direction is great and it really nails the atmosphere.
I personally found the horror and story to be a little predictable and mediocre, but it doesn't matter because this is seriously one of the best shooters I've ever played. All the guns are satisfying to use, the shooting arenas are well designed and the enemy AI is just as good as people say. It's again hard to believe we had this in 2005.
I also need to make a special mention of Extraction Point as it hits the shooter/horror balance better than the base game and has better scares and horror elements in general. I thought it was great and basically the perfect F.E.A.R. experience.
Heavily recommended if you haven't played this already. It's currently on sale on GOG for like $2 I believe. Just make sure to grab the EchoPatch.
EDIT: It's also possible to get EAX working and I really recommend looking into doing so, even if it is a little fiddly.
PugJesus too.
Yes, in many ways lemm.ee shutting down is a great example of the intention of a federated network at work, but it is also somewhat of a cautionary tale when it comes to centralisation. Ideally the load would be spread as such that any single instance shutting down would be reasonably painless to adjust for. There were already too many users and communities on .ee, really. Imagine what a disaster .world shutting down would be in the current state of things.
Good to know again, thank you! I played through Kingmaker last winter and your description is pretty spot on. There were parts of it that were great, parts of which that were not, and parts of it that were downright awful. And particularly the latter parts really soured me on it, and made me super reluctant to play Wrath of the Righteous. If that is Owlcat's idea of high level play I don't really want an epic adventure from them.
I've played Divinity 1&2 and BG3, but I'm less high on Larian than everyone else these days. They're fine games and fun to play but Larian's style of writing isn't my jam and I also think BG3 has a lot of problems that get kind of glossed over.
I missed Pillars 1, so I guess that is on some sort of to-do list. I played about half of Pillars 2 but got bored and never picked it back up.
PSA: If you play ANY of the Pathfinder CRPGs? Get blind fight ASAP. And make sure every arcane caster has a few charges of Glitterdust at any moment.
I had Blind Fight on every single party member and that final bit of the game was still a hellish slog that made actively detest Owlcat.
Hey, you yourself most definitely count among the recurring characters around here too! Don't think we don't appreciate you and your delightfully colourful username.
Why does it pain you to say so? Aren't you supposedly a neutral video game journalist? Are you afraid Nintendo are going to send hitmen after you if you don't include an apologetic qualifier in your headline reporting on issues with their products?
