  • Yeah, an internet comment is a bit whatever, but if you're a student, a plagiarism accusation could get you expelled. That's life ruining.

  • I picked my own carefully. Federates with the biggest instances, has downvotes, and no manual verification of signups.

  • Yeah, that setting was great. I wish more games would have granular difficulty settings.

  • Strongly agreed. To give a comparison, I'm a decently well informed Canadian. I don't know any of the judges in the Canadian Supreme Court. I can name every single one of the American Supreme Court judges and the various issues with several of them. The difference is night and day.

  • It feels like the obvious first step is for the people with many followers to start posting all their content on multiple sites, so that the second point no longer applies.

The trickiest part is the lack of a fully agreed upon alternative. Do you go to Mastodon, instagram, threads, etc? While some folks might have an alternative that they view as a no brainer, it's pretty clear that there isn't overwhelming consensus. Mastodon seems perhaps the most popular as a direct Twitter alternative, but it regularly faces complaints about usability and discoverability. If people post to both Twitter and some random alternative, if that alternative varies wildly, followers will stay on Twitter cause it's where all their favourites are.

  • Your comment has a vibe of complaining about that, but I like it for the exact reason you're replying to. It's a little overtuned (I'd like a couple of minutes before being given a hint), but I don't have the patience for getting stuck for long periods of time, especially if it's because of game limitations (ie, I can think of alternatives, but the game doesn't let me use the alternatives because that's not how video games work).

I also really like when games make it clear that I can't do something right now. Horizon has been great about that, with Aloy remarking that she probably needs some tool or should come back later. I always hated spending 10 minutes trying to get to some obvious treasure, googling it, and being spoiled because the Google result will tell me (in too much detail) that it's a late game thing.

  • They're refundable if you actually buy it. It's like a down payment. They only lose the money if they decide to cancel the order. That helps reduce the risk that the business will pay for an expensive car only to no longer have a buyer for it.

When these trucks are like $90k new, spending a few thousand to hedge your bets on which one will arrive first is nothing. It's like paying for faster delivery. Electric vehicles are in insane demand and sellers cannot keep up. Though honestly, I'm not sure dealerships are gonna have issues as a result.

  • Oh, the government will help. Just they'll do it in some miniscule or pointless way that makes you wonder if you're doing something wrong because you barely see the benefits. There's various tax refunds and whatnot, but they don't come close to how expensive it is to have kids. Ontario claimed there'd be some kinda affordable childcare, but that never really happened (at least not in a way accessible to most). Wage stagnation is perhaps the biggest issue as it's the root cause of why we can't afford to have kids like older generations could. No government seems to give a shit about that.

  • Taking a guess, your instance (not the authors) has the profanity filter mentioned in https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/622 in effect. You can switch instances to avoid it. IIRC, it's disabled by default now (and isn't active on my instance).

  • I actually think that ChatGPT could eventually become the way to play tabletop RPGs. It's not quite there yet, though. It's not the most creative writer, still often has internal consistency flaws, and of course it would have to be trained specifically on the rules of the RPG you're playing. But once it has been, it could probably act as a DM for groups that lack one. Or as a very closely coupled assistant to less experienced DMs who may need hand holding. It could even likely replace players, which could be useful for solo players who can't find a group (or, say, have incompatible scheduling).

Unlike a regular video game, the format of tabletop RPGs seems perfect for our current rudimentary AIs and the constraints are ones that they can probably handle with careful training alone. It's also a useful niche since there's no replacing the open endedness of tabletop RPGs with current technology. There's also a lot of people out there that I'm sure would like to play tabletop RPGs but just lack a group. Anyone who's played them before knows that scheduling is really hard and has killed a lot of groups. That's something an AI could help with.

  • Especially since Hitler himself was Christian. As were frankly almost all medieval European rulers. Christianity has never stopped war (or suffering within wars) and in fact fueled a lot of it.

The fact that some general would make a justification like this is terrifying. If he genuinely thinks this would stop wars or suffering, he's blatantly uneducated. The other option is that he knows what he's saying is bullshit and it's just meant to convince the Christian population, which says terrible things about both how the military is run and how gullible that population is

  • That was why it took me so long to discover I have ADHD (which I got diagnosed with in my 20s, after I had already graduated university).

I recognized challenges I was having, but I both had the issue from the meme and also the issue from your comment. I was a pretty good student despite the ADHD and just developed habits for powering through or "just dealing" with the symptoms. It's a shame, cause now that I'm medicated, it's like night and day. All those periods where I struggled to meet deadlines because I couldn't concentrate... Many of those could have gone away if I had discovered this sooner.

  • I just adore how excited dogs get when you mention the W-word. Some of them will start jumping and yelping and just showing a level of happiness that I'm a bit envious of. When's the last time something made me "jumping happy"? Some dogs get to experience that every day!

  • I like the idea of webp. But ugh it's annoying that I can't easily share it. My main way to communicate with some folks I'm close with is Messenger and it doesn't support webp. So to send people funny pictures, I have to screenshot and crop.

  • I'd like to buy your rock.

  • Yeah! Canadian elections are still far from perfect. We still have first past the post and the size of constituencies can vary wildly. But it's still vastly better than what Americans have. Elections Canada is very good at being non partisan and having reasonable rules for voting. There's countless options for ID and even options if you have absolutely no ID.

  • lol, twenty fucking twenty four. I know the court system can be a little slow, but this is ridiculous. And I'm not sure how much faith I have that it won't just get delayed. Trump has constantly gotten away with shit for too long and continues to do so.

  • Gave Some More News a try and I like it! Feels like a longer, more unshackled John Oliver. Somehow even the ads in the video were amusing.

  • But there's only an issue if the software you're using auto linkifies the domain. They often don't and won't. This seems like a hypothetical problem that probably doesn't exist for most major software. I certainly know no email software is gonna auto linkify this.

If you're curious, you can see if whatever software you're viewing this post in auto linkifies (neither are for me): hshshssu.zip iwuf8aowk.mov

(And if we're manually linkifying, then you don't need to use the new TLD. Eg, not-a-virus.zip.)
