  • How does formatting give it away?

I've honestly struggled a lot trying to figure out what posts are just chatbot trolls and what posts are people worth trying to create a dialogue with.

I mean, sometimes posts will say things that seem like they're intentionally misleading or inherently malicious in some way and it's like... Is this person for real? Are they trying to push some specific narrative? Or are they just misinformed? Or is this just a chatbot designed to upset people and disrupt online conversations on this subject?

  • At this moment, you can buy consumer motherboards with 8 ram slots. Filling them with 64gb dimms you can reach half a TB. It's definitely more affordable than server parts, but it's still pricey. I guess you're looking at a $1500 system rather than a $20,000 system.

  • An inconsistent voltage is a bit of a deal breaker if it's a significant swing. For example, AA batteries are supposed to be 1.5v. Typically you can measure them at 1.7v when they're brand new, and that's fine. The voltage will drop as it's used and devices tend to stop functioning when the battery reaches about 1.3v.

That's a fairly narrow range of voltage required to keep the device working correctly.

  • It's not a Lemmy thing, it's an Internet thing.

Truth be told, irony, sarcasm and nuance, are quite hard to do in a text format without being explicit. Hell, that's the main reason emojis exist, to replace the facial gestures and tone of voice we use to cue each other in on subtle aspects of language like sarcasm.

  • Consumer grade Linux Mint is impossible to differentiate from Windows/MacOS.

That sure is easy to say.

In practice, I tried to use mint for the os on a family computer and just couldn't make it work. I've been an IT guy for years and have tons of experience with both Windows and MacOS, but virtually none with Linux. Long story short, trying to make that machine work with Linux mint was just taking up way too much of my time. I just needed to get a few simple features out of it (and maybe 1 hard feature, parental controls). But having very little Linux experience, it just wasn't going to happen in a reasonable time frame. I eventually had to give up and put the Mac OS back on it (an iMac).

Anyway, mint actually has a lot in common with the Mac OS, it makes a very small set of controls very easy to use. And technically, you can do just about anything else you need to with the terminal, but that can be challenging to navigate.

  • Skip Scarface, I'll give you a quick synopsis. Robert De Niro sells cocaine, business is booming, life is great, he's the best and smartest criminal in history, what a good life! I guess on top of selling all the coke he should also be doing all the coke, wow, this is even better than before! He's a genius! Oh shit, the feds found out about his operation, no problem he's a badass, he'll just take em' all it with his AK! Oh, wow that plan did not go well at all... The end.

Now watch Goodfellas instead. And try to figure out if any of the characters (including the narrator) are "good guys".

  • Yeah, I used Adobe CS3 on the Mac for a very long time, because I may have had the activation key for my college's site license...

That never gave me any trouble. But using other keys or cracks, a real pain in the ass.

  • So, cyberbullying and toxic gamer communities are very much a thing and definitely a problem, but I have to admit, that story really did make day... I laughed for a while, I shared it with my neighbors, it's still fucking funny!

You know, the thing is... the whole mess was entirely Elon's fault. If he just wanted an escape from his stressful life, he could totally just play the game and it would work out fine for him. But because he felt the narcissistic need to live stream it (because he apparently desperately needs others to tell him how awesome he is), he got his stupid face kicked into the mud. And that's really on him...

  • Ok, so I've tried gimp in the past, but had a hard time with it. Honestly, my Photoshop skills are mostly self taught (and not all that impressive), but that's the interface I know. How similar to Photoshop can one make the interface in gimp these days? Because that's probably my biggest hurdle.

  • Which is a good argument for regulation. Regulation prevents industry from doing things that may be in their individual best interest but are against public best interests or the best interests of the industry as a whole.
