To be totally honest you have nothing to apologize for. Dogs and cats are metabolically different to humans and cannot survive on a vegan diet unlike us. Forcing obligate carnivore pets on vegan diets is certainly animal abuse.

I remember when there was a growing campaign to ban r/nonewnormal on Reddit due to it being a hub of medical disinformation and conspiracy theories surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, and that this led to a blackout much like the later API protests.

Rather than read the room and introduce a new rule banning medical disinformation, Reddit's Tintin-looking moron of a CEO instead threw out tonnes of BS statistics on brigading likely plucked out of his own sphincter, and banned the subreddit because their activity exceeded this arbitrary percentage he made up.

And before you tell me this guy's figures were legit, aren't we forgetting that he pathologically lied about his interactions with the Sync developer? Spez is a snake.

Some good examples:

• Fat acceptance and body positivity. Obesity is glorified (even fetishized) when it's a woman, whereas obese men are shunned. Have you noticed that nobody in the fat acceptance movement is vouching for the 300lb basement dwellers?
• Older ladies who date younger guys are called cougars, whereas if you flip the gender roles, an older man dating a younger lady half his age is going to be labelled a pedophile, even if she's of-age. Just look at at the anger surrounding Tobey Maguire (48 years old) dating a 20 year old actress. There are people who legitimately think men like him should be hunted for sport.
• The amount of effort you have to put into your dating profile. Women have the opposite problem of being inundated with matches even with minimal effort.

So imagine you're on PornHub and then out of nowhere, Clippy shows up and says "hmmm looks like you need some help pleasuring yourself", then starts flicking through similar nude pictures and videos to what you've been looking at before. The idle animation of the AI assistant even changes to Clippy morphing into the shape of a penis and shagging a rolled up piece of lined paper is if it were a fleshlight. You can't tell if Microsoft are mocking you for being a coomer, nor can you tell whether to find Clippy's sexual deviancy funny or creepy.

Somehow that hypothetical dystopia of Clippy watching you masturbate is only slightly worse than what Microsoft plan to do with Recall. If the mere thought of a machine learning AI taking screenshots of your desktop every few seconds and learning from your computer usage habits isn't absolutely fucking terrifying... Then imagine that these are likely being uploaded to a server for the perusal of advertisers, intelligence agencies and any hackers skilled enough to break into Microsoft's servers.

Even if it was stored locally, all it takes is one dodgy web link for you to inadvertently send all your Recall data to a hacker and have it ransomed.

Negotiate a peace agreement between NATO, the European Union, Ukraine and Russia, with the aim of:

• Keeping control of Crimea and small parts of the Donbas in exchange for the land Ukraine gained in their Kursk incursion. This would give Russia access to a second sea port that can be used all year round, and unlike Kaliningrad, isn't an exclave sandwiched between NATO powers.
• Negotiating the immediate release of all POWs on both sides.
• Obtaining a neutrality agreement to ensure Ukraine will not join NATO (EU or EFTA membership is fine.) Not really anything we can do about Finland or Sweden joining.
• Joint Russian and Western aid in rebuilding Ukraine.
• Lifting all economic sanctions (including those placed on Russia before 2022), travel restrictions and readmission back into the G7, Council of Europe, FIFA, IOC, etc.

I used to be hugely into World of Warcraft.

The more I think about it, what ruined the game for me wasn't a particular update or new game feature. It was the community, or rather how much it has degraded into a hotbed of elitism, toxicity and greed.

WoW is the kind of community where you'll be ostracized from joining groups unless you already have a high ranking. And even if you get into a group, people will abandon the group or boot you out and call you a "boosted retard" in the process over a minor error, like dying to a boss mechanic or not pressing the Bloodlust/Time Warp/Heroism button in time.

Blizzard doesn't do anything, because Activision and Microsoft have spent years gutting out their customer support teams and installing automated systems in their place.

Not current workplace but previous ones.

• Used to work with a guy who had no filter whatsoever and would openly brag about how efficiently and quickly he'd work and multitask, and about the 9/10 models he used to shag back when he lived in South East Asia. He was fired from my workplace after a string of incidents where he growled at a female colleague, bullied several other colleagues over bad quality monitors and openly used racial slurs in the office.
• That same guy went to work for an energy company that I had other friends work at. I learned he was fired and escorted out by security within minutes after being reprimanded by a team leader. He went into a company-wide Slack channel and openly called her a "fucking bitch."
• Two people got fired for taking dick pics in the office whilst on an evening shift and posting them on their socials.

Everyone would likely defederate from them, much in the same way that you all rushed to close the shutters upon Threads.

I also don't ever see this happening, unless Spez fucks up with Reddit so badly that it sparks a mass user exodus, much in the same way that Digg v4 sank any hopes of Kevin Rose remaining a successful tech entrepreneur.

I don't think the "decentralize and federate everything" strategy is a good idea when it comes to online marketplaces.

We've seen how quickly bad actors can wreak havoc on the Fediverse like that one time when Lemmy Shitpost was closed for weeks due to people creating new instances of their own and spamming the community with CSAM. Imagine how much you open the community up to scams or criminal activity when money gets involved.

Gaming was at one point a serious hurdle. Back in 2007 when I was forced to switch from Windows XP to Ubuntu due to a former friend's IT fuck-up, the only Windows game I could legitimately get running was World of Warcraft, and even then the installation process was arduous.

Valve deserves much of the credit for getting Linux into the state where it can play a vast majority of Windows games with comparable or even better performance.

The true hurdle now is with anticheat.

I have friends who work in IT and would probably slam their head against the wall if they had to deal with Control Panel being removed.

Are Microsoft deliberately trying to make the fabled Year of the Linux Desktop finally become a reality? Because I feel like we're two or three more dumbfuck business moves away from this...

I think it says a lot more about how much recent versions of Windows have bogged down the whole gaming experience.

Microsoft seems to have forgotten that people want an operating system that works, not something bloated with bullshit like telemetry, advertisements, tracking cookies and artificial intelligence. The only reason they even have a market lead in the desktop space is due to marketing and monopolistic practices.

I used to work for a small PPI claims management company. Our accounts team had a WhatsApp group for social discussion outside of work.

All of our internal work comms were handled through Slack.

I don't work in IT, and a lot of bigger companies (my employer included) have restrictions on what employees can install on their work machines. It's basic security measures to prevent malware infections.

Amazon used to sell products, not Shein-grade self-destructing dropshipped garbage from all-consonant brands.

I knew it wasn't just my imagination. Amazon has been filled with cheap Chinese knock-off brands in recent years, to the point where I may as well be using Temu or Wish for a bargain.

If you went from the internet's storefront to an upmarket AliExpress, that's not a good sign.

Google are the ones who have really gone down the toilet in recent years. They ditched cached pages, soured search results with paid ads and even their image search is as bad as Tineye for reverse image searching these days. Literally the only thing Alphabet really have going for them anymore is Android and YouTube.

It's baffling that a company which was once so dominant in the web search space that their name was literally used as a verb for looking things up for decades have now enshittified their flagship product so much that they're making rivals like Bing, Lycos, Duckduckgo, etc look like viable alternatives.

There was a screenshot I once saw of a Chinese netizen's web browser in the late-2000's, using Internet Explorer 6 and tonnes of third-party toolbars. I think I saw it back when Digg was still a thing. We've now reached the age where major websites are more cluttered with notifications than a malware-infected browser was 15 years ago, and where everybody is tracking everything that you do online.

25 years ago, we legitimately drove RealNetworks into the ground for a lot less than what we're allowing Google, Microsoft, Meta, X, etc to get away in the modern day.

Google and YouTube are pretty fucking bad without an ad-blocker installed. From someone who has worked in jobs where I may as well have called myself a 'Professional Googler' and where I do not have permissions to install an ad-blocker on my work computer, the amount of ads I get buried with really sours the experience.

Also, a lot of news sites (particularly anything owned by Reach PLC such as the Mirror) are now flipping the middle-finger at GDPR by forcing users to pay to reject tracking cookies. Here's a screengrab from the Daily Mirror website...

That's the only silver lining I can think of with Ron DeSantis and the fight Disney chose to pick with him. Imagine pissing off the Republicans to the point where they do positive copyright reforms.

Anyone with basic critical thinking skills would have known this whole scandal was bullshit in the first place. Did it not occur to any of these TERFs and transphobes that Algeria (a Muslim nation known for persecuting the LGBTQ community as a whole) is one of the least-likely nations to field a trans candidate?
