  • Protip: anytime you think using the word “woke” is appropriate for a statement take a second and describe exactly what you mean instead of using a stand-in that has no specific definition and can mean widely different things depending on the audience. If you can’t explain what you’re trying to say specifically your point isn’t worth sharing. It’s the same effect as when people use curse words as stand ins for actually communicating what they think or feel - it’s a barrier to communication and lazy.

As it stands now your comment makes no sense and doesn’t convey any of your actual thoughts on the movie. Wtf is “woke in the extreme sense” or how did the movie “poke fun” at “wokeness”.

Too many smooth brains use the word “woke” as a replacement for actually having to think about what they want to say. Don’t be a smooth brain.

  • I’m not sure how using that footage would have been more impactful than just focusing on the person like it did. Plus that would unnecessarily break the diegesis of the film.

You said the film felt ultimately pretentious, that’s what I was responding to in that comment. Idk how this movie came off as pretentious considering the real world implications of his life. I didn’t get the feeling anything shown was unimportant but was trying to portray itself as more important than it actually was. Maybe I just need more clarification from you around that opinion.

  • Theres a lot here and I dont have the time to tackle everything but I will say the movie isnt about making the atomic bomb, its about Oppenheimer and the complexities of the person who made the bomb because of his impact on history.

There only being silence when the bomb actually went off was the perfect way to depict the scene - Oppenheimer opened pandora's box and the focus is entirely on the person instead of the explosion. I thought it was a bold and intelligent creative choice precisely because it makes you engage with the inner workings of Oppy's mind and the central premise of the film. Making the dramatic tension about an explosion instead of what the movie is actually about is what would have came off as pretentious to me.

I think you can argue against the movie being pretentious in general because this isnt a work of fiction and Oppenheimer was incredibly important and influential and effected actual lives. Every little moment, quirk, or relationship molded him and created the person that literally changed the world. Folks can disagree on whether they have a positive or negative perception of Oppenheimer but to say the man and his life's depictions are unimportant or pretentious doesn't seem fair.

  • My primary complaint with the show is the abysmally bad script, the lackluster direction, and completely lack of momentum and pacing. Those are completely separate from complaints that stem from expectations. Even so, Secret Invasion is an adaptation - creators who make adaptations have to account for expectations as a requirement for doing the project else they should make an original work and call it something else.

  • Those two mentioned shows were good but even then should have been the lowest bar that the subsequent shows continued to improve upon. It’s honestly sad that they seem to have gotten worse with each new entry.

I didn’t even realize we were in the penultimate episode until I looked up the episodes reception after, that’s how poor the pacing was for this episode. Plus Fury exclaiming something to the effect of “let’s end this” made me literally laugh out loud with secondhand embarrassment.

Secret Invasion IMO should have been a massive crossover of multiple shows and it’s effects should be touching every corner of the MCU. Using it as a vehicle to ultimately just say what Fury has been up to behind the scenes of the mcu and deliver more info about his personal life is such a baffling choice.

  • Sir, I just wanna call out that having plot points in a show doesn’t make it good. There’s a common notion thrown around today in response to this reductive line of thinking that “plot does not equal good”. Tv and movies are visual mediums with different components that have to come together in a cohesive way to actually create something worthwhile. Secret Invasion cares about nothing but plot - it doesn’t care about writing, direction, cinematography, costume/ set design, or literally anything that the audience can reasonably pick up on. It only cares about serving up whatever plot points are bare bones required for whatever the next marvel show is.

You cannot promise with any degree of honesty or integrity that all the negative reception to this bad show is from people who have unrealistic expectations.

  • Disney+ has officially lost all credibility with me. This show was supposed to be marvel’s Andor from the way people were hyping it up and so far it’s exhibited some of the worst writing and direction of the entire mcu. It’s completely soulless and uninspired, even Sam Jackson seems like he doesn’t wanna be there in every scene. I’m usually the most positive person in my circles when it comes to new shows and marvel stuff but there’s no excuse for how bad this is - I wanted to like it so bad, especially after speculating about secret invasion making it to the mcu for the better part of a decade. How hard is it to just ditch the writers room and let 1 or 2 strong creators who are familiar with the content take the lead? It’s also so short that they could have absolutely afforded a director who could bring the content alive. Disney is incapable of making quality content at this point as far as I’m concerned and I think I’m done with Disney+ mcu shows in general now.

If folks wanna discuss specifics, I’m happy too, but the overall package is so poor I had to express my general feelings above.

  • Movies that release at the same time are considered to be competing because most audiences don’t go watch two movies in a weekend, they pick 1. Genre and demographic don’t necessarily have to be the same for movies to compete but there’s definitely overlap here. Barbie is being made by an auteur director, just like Oppenheimer. That’s partially why Barbie has hype, there’s a legitimately great director handling it instead of some unknown that is more likely to be pushed around by producers. Me and most of my friends all want to see both and we’re 30 year olds. Also worth mentioning that couples generally alternate between who gets to pick the movie and this is a perfect example of dudes wanting Oppy and ladies wanting Barbie - who will come out on top? It’s fun to talk about.

  • That’s the most straw man argument I’ve seen in a while.

Maybe take a step back and think about how using nazi analogies when discussing meat eaters is counterproductive to your beliefs and frigging offensive to large swaths of the global population who were affected by nazis. Those two things are not comparable and you need to do some self education if you think that’s okay or persuasive.

  • Some people really think being a good example of the product of their beliefs and being obnoxiously obtuse and argumentative about their beliefs are equally effective at persuading others to think like them.

I can tell you no person ever in the history of humanity was convinced by the latter.

  • I guess this is a weird one because I think apple runs it’s streaming service the best out of all of them. They seem to actually let creatives control the shows instead of strong-arming them with an army of producers. Plus, apple wouldn’t buy all of Disney, just part of the entertainment division.

  • Nah, it’s called Voyager as a nod to Apollo, the most popular Reddit app that had to shutdown because of the api changes and the UI inspiration for wefwef/voyager. Been following wefwef/voyager since the beginning so I figured I’d chime in!

  • Yeah, it’s completely unnecessary. People in real life are rarely this rude off the bat so idk why some folks think it’s okay to become such an edgelord when they sit behind a keyboard. Do they not realize there’s human beings on the other side of the screen?
