  • Why did you have to bring attitude into it?

There are components of various flying machines that are critical and must be made at certain temp and humidity. Else they are out of spec. That's pretty much it. The people in charge of this are less thorough than you'd like.

    Be nicer.

  • I made so much money on this kinda stuff. And even after all updated they still kept those damn chart recorders. Luckily they were standalone and I guess easier than hitting print.

And most of you would be terrified if you knew what they were manufacturing. Ignorance is bliss, trust.

  • I don't know if it's still there but I once did some work getting a plasma cutter back to operational. OS/2. Not even warp!

Oh it's a pretty solid OS but i mean, damn.

Parallel port hardware key and everything. I do believe in keeping what works working but at some point you gotta let go because you run out of people that can solve problems with it.

  • Interesting take. I grew up Catholic, Sunday school yada yada. That guilt.. that is some fucked up shit to put into a child.

But as you put it, Christians are far more insufferable and a significant reason why I changed my faith.

And please spare me how the Catholic Church is somehow king of pedo. Every Christian sect is rife with them. If you care about your kids stay away from them all. You can give them a better handle on ethics and mortality with some basic cartoons. And they'll probably enjoy them rather than groan at the stupid outdated biblical shit you want to make them learn.

Yeah, I'm biased but i stand by that statement.

  • No no no you misunderstood me.

I was being honest, I know nothing of rust. I have however used python in embedded systems with positive results. The product didn't make it but for other reasons.

Funny you mention java, that's sorta what I'm stuck in but not like you think. Beyond the fact that it's a bloated nightmare.

I'm just a low-level programmer at heart but I have bills to pay. The rust stuff was all just a joke.. i don't know it but maybe i should. Thanks for the info.

Saying anymore about what I do is just super embarrassing but i promise i meant no ill will. Excuse my frustration, I'm locked into a proprietary system i have no control over. You would laugh your ass off if you saw it. Anyway, i meant no offense, have a good night!

  • That's the number you can call me on.

When you call, ask for Mike Jones!

It would be a blast to see the memes if the speakers name was that. I was happy to see the ref. That was a long time ago and fairly localized. I don't even know what happened to that guy.

Those simple times of 9-layer paint and causing pain in the turning lane

  • Hah thanks for clarifying. I was joking too and it's a shame I couldn't post the results.

Though I admit i don't know anything about rust. I'm sure I'd like it better than the proprietary garbage i use now that just gets converted to ASM / PLC code in the end. But I can't skip the middle man. I'm not gonna try but probably 30mins for me to "write" the above.

Besides, how do you make money if I can code something in an hour as opposed to 2 days?

  • Wow that's a very exhausting language. I dropped your code into an online rust to asm converter and it actually wasn't more! I did try to post it for fun but lemmy kept messing up the code block. Oh well, wasn't that amusing anyway!

  • These days.. maybe you are right. When i was fresh out into the world I lived paycheck to paycheck. Rent comes due, I have to try and stretch it as i have a few days grace and i need things like food to live and gas to get to work.

Get my check, deposit it, give rent check later that day. Guess which cleared first? I was short 12 cents and got hit with $80 in fees (inflation adjusted it's nearly twice that now) and had to pay rent via money order for 6 months. 12 cents! They could have just shorted it that amount and I'd have been happy to give them a quarter I had laying around. But rather it just made my next month more miserable.

I do think things are better now and there are plenty of overdraft protection methods in place and who uses checks anyway but fact is they had my deposit and did the withdrawal first.

I'm genuinely glad you've never had to deal with such a situation and yes $35 isn't bad. But the thing is - fuck banks. They will find every opportunity to hurt the less fortunate.

Ironically I still bank with them, or what they became. I'm on my 4th account now because their fraud protection is pretty good. So there's a positive aspect.

  • I feel you. My Nokia N900 and later N9 were great solutions. All my sms, aim, icq, msn etc was all seamless along with instant load time. Then came things like line, FB messenger, Whatsapp. It was just how to have everything in one place.

RCS is probably the best option at this point if Imessage could use it. Then i wouldn't need other apps for those friends to get decent quality.

Sad to learn signal wasn't the standalone service I thought it was. I might sound old but really don't care about sticker packs. I do care about quality shares without another app.

  • I have to agree with most people, arch is probably the way to go.

But given the subject I'm gonna piggy back on you and ask about KDE Neon. This is what got me back into desktop Linux after installing it on an old crappy tablet.

Now i currently run it on a couple older but upgraded AIOs and even my server that primarily does VMs.

If i understand it's a little more bleeding edge than people would normally like but I'm curious the community thoughts on it as i don't hear much. Am I missing out not running arch or mint?

  • What is your demo? In my world it's quite different. Isn't Whatsapp proprietary? And I know few that will bother with signal these days. I've started getting obvious spam invites on it as well so...

RCS should just be the standard. There is no reason to argue that.. it doesn't end the apps you use but many of us are tired of multiple apps.

  • But they say never wear a belt with suspenders!

Seriously tho hey late reply just wanted to say thanks, i never even thought to look into that. Seems to be the answer I needed.. a refreshingly simple solution!

I have to manage multiple VPN clients for various reasons and i get twisted up pretty easily. I'm sure that too is simple I just have a mental block on it. But yeah thanks again!

  • Interesting. Can relate having spent most of my life on a southern coast. One summer my parents shipped me to my uncle in Denver for a few weeks. One day we dropped by an air show. It's summer and it's hot (mid 90s or so) but you can't feel it. People passing out was common enough it had an announcement.

Cut to later that day and we are up in the mountains and I'm walking through a snow bank with the same T-shirt and shorts from earlier, perfectly comfortable.

So yeah if it's dry you can wear about anything.. when it's humid nothing seems to work be it hot or cold. If we are gonna change the climate here are my notes: I'd like 65-68degF and let's say 45% RH. All day everyday. Make it so!

  • I'm gonna watch how your post is voted. I've gotten burned for that stance my entire life even though it's perfectly logical.

Don't really get the idea you aren't supposed to try stuff out without upfront payment. Slightly better now but meh.

Don't you worry though, any software I needed for business was all bought and paid for. I'm sure a few pennies got to the programmers / developers / artists that designed it. And i simply passed the cost on to my clients. Pretty obvious who wins here.

Then again I don't really get what this post is about, just replying to you.

Edit: is qbitorrent still cool? I mean uTorrent was cool till it wasn't. I never update it but I tried it out on Linux earlier this year and even with a VPN it leaked and i got a message from my ISP next day. That's likely on me and bad settings but just checking

  • Yeah I got you.. that was a stupid thing to say. I never meant it like that. I mean hell at the end of the day you got me to look up a couple things.

It was a good lesson. And I'm usually banging heads with friends because they are judging and then i did it. Thanks for checking me.

  • Appreciate that but now I don't know how to reply without sounding condescending.. dammit! :) but you know, if you go back to 1995 bad boys that was how i communicated. Years later i relocated and nearly got killed for pointing out a funny and quite justified slight at a certain NFL team.

I'm not sure I have a point beyond stay trigger happy and call fuckers like me out! We all make mistakes and I have no problem being called out.

Shit, i still sound condescending don't I? It's just hard not to after a while. I don't know if it'll be Linux worthy but hit me up if you decide to try out borderlands 4. We'd be happy to have a new player in the group.

  • Great info, thanks. Most of my hardware is old. But that's actually a good thing I think. I have a Lenovo ideacentre i plucked back from a friend as it was gathering dust. I upgraded the ram and SSD and installed neon on a whim and it's amazing.

That's what sorta started tracking me back.. have continued using Linux for servers but i was impressed at that desktop. Now I know neon is a bit bleeding edge so any recommendations on a distro? I started with freebsd back in the day, then gentoo for desktop, then Ubuntu minimal for servers if that helps. Not afraid to get my hands dirty but prefer simplicity.

I found a 256GB SSD that should be enough for some testing. I need to grab some files off it but then it's ready to go. Distro advice appreciated. Remember i just want to test :) TIA
