  • It is remotely true. Waving German flags at soccer games was essentially non-existent. Germans are more likely to identify as European rather than German, compared to other EU nations. If you ask Europeans "is your culture superior" people like Greeks say yes but people like Germans say no.

A good example would be the UK or France .They believe they are top dogs but, by US standards, they are impoverished.

  • Oh no! The country that stole a ton of shit suddenly is not so great now that they can't steal more shit!

But really, they got all the global wealth and it made them rich. They thought they were rich because they were intrinsically great but really they were just propping themselves up. They thought they could brexit and retain their greatness but the EU wasn't stifling them it was masking their decline.

  • In order to grow a chat app you need a consistent and stable interface over a long period of time. It can't have too much bullshit in it either.

In order to grow your career at Google you need to build ridiculous shit and then leave once you get your promo. Entire departments get reorged so someone can hit their people manager quota.

Product groups, business units, "orgs", VPs, SVPs, it's all just a game and "everyone's playing except you." This is why Google kills shit. Because Google rewards behavior that results in killing shit.

  • Telemetry, in the context of software development and UX design, is either a decision by the misinformed or just an excuse to save costs by axing the Windows QA department.

That's very silly. That's actually such a ridiculous opinion I'm pretty sure you've left out some assumption that would make it make sense.

  • Except this isn't 1982 and that computer is running Windows 11, not Multix. The CPU probably has at least 8 cores and the NIC can do at least a gigabit. A network retry is not going to matter.

  • I agree, it should be opt in. Where I disagree is with how strongly people react against it.

If you buy a car and it only comes with Bluetooth do you have a meltdown? Do you kick, scream, and cry that Big Car is going to steal your data? No that's fucking ridiculous. But grown ass man children on Lemmy act that way when Microsoft wants to know how many gigs of ram they have.

  • Microsoft has more to lose than almost any other tech company. They also have more process, legal enforcement, and bureaucracy than most other tech companies.

There's no fear of a lone engineer moving fast and breaking things at Microsoft. If someone at Microsoft had an idea for how they'd use your data they'd have to pass it through 5 chains of command, 2 tech orgs, and Legal just to begin the process.

  • During Covid they were talking about letting people back on planes if everyone wore a mask. I told a friend that's ridiculous, the total volume of air will be filled with corona virus, the mask doesn't stop the virus it just projects the virus upwards.

Friend lost his shit. Called me a science denier and legitimately thought I was a right wing lunatic. The guy is a Staff software engineer at Meta. We rarely talk anymore which is too bad but also maybe for the best.
