  • Yeah, Reddit hasn't really changed the API itself with these recent changes, they just made the keys to it cost money.

An API is basically a communication standard between the app and Reddit, that standard changes as new features are added or decisions are made. The app might make a request like getvideo and expect to get a video with the .redditvid extension. Now let's say Reddit decided to fix their shitty video player and now they start rolling out a new video format, .redditvidgood, and update the API so that getvideo returns this new type.

Now the app makes a getvideo request and gets a .redditvidgood video, but it has no idea how to handle this format, it's still expecting the old .redditvid format. At best the app will fail to load these new videos but still function otherwise, at worst the app will crash any time it tries to load a video. In this example, even with the best case scenario most videos don't work anymore. It's only a matter of time before a change completely breaks all apps that don't update for the current API, and only a dev with the source code can make those updates to the app.

  • Yeah, feels like we have taken a step back almost, we went from Apollo to shuttle and back to basically Apollo as far as overall look.

The closest thing to the shuttle that has a planned Q1 2024 launch date is Dreamchaser. It's much smaller than the shuttle and not nearly as capable, but it at least looks cooler and lands like the shuttle.

  • I hate to say this, but Facebook Messenger is one of the most fully featured messaging apps. It has its own internal messaging standard that offers iMessage like features between Facebook users, and it also is one of the better SMS apps out there.

I can see why they make it its own app, it's supposed to replace other messaging apps.

  • I'm using sync revanced for Reddit, the problem is it's only a matter of time before the API changes and the app stops working. Until then though I'll use both sync for reddit and sync for lemmy side by side

  • I don't know much about Russian prisons, but I might take my chances on the battlefield and try escaping.

That is, unless you have family, in which case I wouldn't put it past them to force compliance by threatening your family. I would probably serve "loyally" if not doing so meant my family would be thrown in torture prison for life or killed.

  • Looks like she might have targeted higher risk babies so it's harder to catch, and of course many murders seem to be really good at faking feelings and appearing innocent. One part in the article makes me think all the victims were premature births, and that some of them were especially at risk due to that.

  • we are very screwed, in large part because of people like you, enthusiastically volunteering to help with propaganda in support of corporate real estate and retail tycoons.

Where in the hell did you get that from? What does anything I said have to do with real estate?

you could be part of the solution by wearing a mask.

Me being the only person wearing a mask isn't going to help solve anything.

Did you seriously just compare a bad flu virus to HIV? You are just being ridiculous now.

Do you think it's safe outside for an immune compromised person if im the only one wearing a mask? No, obviously it's not. Me staying a mask is going to have no effect on their safety in public. If I went over to this person's house, sure, I would wear a mask if they wanted me to, but in public where nobody is wearing one it's kinda pointless.

  • If getting sick is that high of a risk, do you really think relying on everyone in public to do something is worth the risk? If it only takes one person not doing something to put yourself at risk, you will be at risk, because you just can't trust everyone in public to do it.

Yeah, I'm not writing a mask for the rest of my life, sorry. Nobody else is wearing one, everyone is agreeing to be out in public without a mask, that's just how life is now.

If everyone around me is not wearing masks, the chances that me specifically will be the cause of someone getting so sick they have disabilities is extremely low. If everyone not wearing a mask would infect dozens or hundreds as you claim, we are already screwed.

  • If you have medical conditions where you can't risk getting covid, then you shouldn't be going outside with other people in the first place, mask or not.

I don't know how to make this more clear, literally basically everyone doesn't wear a mask anymore here, there is no point to me being the one person wearing one.

  • If I gave covid to anyone, it was someone who either got it even though I was wearing a mask, or they were intentionally at an unmasked event where neither of us was required to wear one. Either way, I'm not going to be sorry for following the rules and trying to socialize during the pandemic.

I highly doubt I caused anyone death or disability, relatively few people got disabilities or death from covid compared to the whole population.
