For what it’s worth I also haven’t had any problems. Maybe we’re just lucky, though.

Arguably their characters in The Last of Us and The Mandalorian are relatively similar, at least I thought so, but I have only seen two seasons of The Mandalorian.

Oh, plenty of grocery stores sell these things, so it would be nice to be able to return them at the same place. This matters especially for people who don’t drive because the dedicated place may be difficult to get to by transit, but it also might just be out of the way for most people which means they’re kind of encouraged to be lazy and just throw it out in the regular trash.

We’re pretty shut in because of health concerns and I feel for you :(. Sucks that everybody else has moved on and just thinks you’re being ridiculous. I guess at this point I don’t know when to stop worrying. Sometimes I think “maybe it really is fine now” but then you hear about somebody getting ruined by long COVID and it just seems really scary. I’m also just kind of upset about how everything went down… If nothing else I kind of just mask up still out of spite.

The sacrifice isn’t really wearing a mask. It’s avoiding the get togethers and in person events and having people forget about you and move on with their lives while you’re still cautious. You could argue that these are small things too, but it’s a pretty big change for most people, and while they claimed this was a “big sacrifice” that’s just a figure of speech… They didn’t claim it was something they couldn’t do or weren’t willing to do, just that it sucks… Which it does.

I like what Valve does and I sound like a fanboy sometimes because they just keep doing great stuff… But I don’t fucking trust them long term. I hope they prove me wrong, of course! I also don’t really trust anybody else.

Well… Not to take away any points from Valve because it’s still a big chunk of infrastructure, but this made me pause… I think steam content is arguably easier to serve than something like Netflix. Netflix has to deal with encoding content and it’s important for streams to not buffer, so it has to consistently stream data at a decent rate (if steam hiccups it sucks, but it’s not a problem where you’re interrupted mid game, at least). Games can be a lot bigger than videos, but I’m not sure how much that matters for this. Storage is relatively cheap and Netflix will probably have multiple copies of each video in different codecs and bitrates which might make it more equivalent storage wise? Per hour of entertainment my guess is that Netflix actually has to send more data over the network than steam on average. There’s plenty of smaller games, and people can often spend hundreds of hours in a single game. If somebody rewatches a show they’ll stream it again, but if they replay a game they might still have a copy downloaded…

I don’t know any of the actual details, but I’m curious now how they actually compare! I’d guess Netflix probably has twice as many active users as steam, and I’d guess Netflix uses more bandwidth per user than steam (I wouldn’t be terribly surprised if it was 10x as much… I think people could easily stream 50gb per day, and I maaaaybe download that much from steam in a couple of weeks on average). Would be curious how it actually works out!

This isn’t to say steam is free to host, it obviously isn’t, I just think Netflix might be harder. I’m a tiny bit worried about Steam’s back catalog long term, eventually it may not be deemed profitable to keep hosting old games “for free”. Like eventually if nobody is buying a game anymore, but people keep downloading it, it couuuuld technically cost steam more to host than they made off of it, and maintaining storage long term costs money too (though hopefully this keeps getting less expensive over time). The margins for Valve are super high, though, so hopefully it doesn’t matter!

Yeah! I still wish we had these returns at grocery stores. I’m sure some do it, but I don’t think the ones near me do :(.

Oh, cool. I don’t shop at Best Buy or Home Depot or Lowes because they’re all out of the way and I don’t drive, so I don’t really know about these stores. That’s good to know, though.

I’m originally from Canada. This might be something that’s gotten better, at least for batteries and CFLs, but I think large electronics like TVs are still supposed to be taken to the eco centre with a fee. I could just be misinformed though.

That’s very different than every grocery store, though. Might also be different in Canada.

My understanding is that little farts tend to be smellier than big farts because the big farts are often just swallowed air, but the little farts come from the gas released when the microbes in your gut digest something (which is also why certain foods like beans can make you really gassy because you can’t digest some of the fiber in them, but the bacteria can… also a similar situation with sugar alcohols (see the devil gummy bears)).

I’ve got bad news for you…

Sometimes your place of work might have electronics recycling bins or something, but for the most part you’re expected to go to a special eco centre to recycle large electronics and batteries and stuff like this. Often you even have to pay a fee for them to take these items, which seems incredibly stupid to me because it just encourages everybody to throw them out with the normal trash.

You may find some stores in some places that will take this stuff, but as far as I know this is not commonplace in much of North America. There are also some services where you can pay a fee for somebody to collect an item. We did that for a swollen lithium cell recently.

I’m really curious about bonsai but it seems hard to get into! I also worry that I don’t have a good eye for aesthetics, and that might be a problem too, haha. It seems really cool though.

… also maybe this seems like a stupid concern, but sometimes I wonder if it’s cruel to the tree? I know little actual details, though… and also most people wouldn’t care about a tree’s feelings, haha.

I feel you and I’ve been fighting this. I feel like personally I’m a lot happier and find it easier to do things when I actually do my hobbies… It’s kind of like exercise. You often don’t want to do it when you’re busy and tired, but if you do it consistently you usually have more energy and feel better in the long term. Totally understand it can be a luxury to even consider doing a hobby, and I definitely don’t know your situation, but I hope you can push through and get to a better balance! Life’s too hard sometimes :(.

I was surprised by this too! I mean I can understand thinking that crepes will be hard because they’re pretty dainty and might be delicate, but they’re surprisingly easy to do.

The start of Skyrim is sooooooo long and so boring. I didn’t even enjoy it the first time… by the time I got out o the caves I was burnt out and gave up on the game for like 12 years. I got into it recently, but I almost always bounced off of it because I didn’t enjoy the opening at all. Bethesda is probably the absolute worst company at game openings. Even Privateer’s Hold in Daggerfall is kind of notorious for grinding players into a bored paste. Possibly the only game that gives Bethesda a run for their money is the awful temple section in Fallout 2, but I assume that’s why they bought the franchise lol.

My brain starts to freeze in loud environments. Ear plugs help me too :). It’s a tip that took me far too long to realize.
