  • I grew up pretty rural as well but in a very liberal state and since course standards were set at the state government level, the education definitely leaned that way. I think Columbus is still celebrated in certain parts of this country where they refuse to acknowledge indigenous people's day.

  • Far and away the 90s and it's not even close. We had the internet but it wasn't stalking us. We had cell phones but your parents couldn't drop a tracker app on it to see if you were actually at Doug's house. Gas was cheap. Airports were better, flying was better, fewer people, god I miss the 90s.

  • The refrigerant recovery machine is around $500 entry level, you also need the correct tank and a good scale. That's on top of the manifold, new refrigerant, vacuum pump, etc. I don't know much about it but I looked into it once upon a time for automotive DIY and decided it was too costly to mess with.

  • You can be as high and mighty as you want but you won't find a wide audience without relaxing your lexicon and writing with prose. In translation, you've got to dumb it down because most people are dumb. We see a big and/or uncommon word and give up on the entire piece, I hate to break it to you but that's just the way it is.

  • I'm educated well enough, I was mostly being sarcastic but the fact is that no one uses that word. I figured what it meant based on context but still had to go look it up and was annoyed. Sometimes it seems like a writer feels like being vague and beats you over the head with a thesaurus.

  • Can we please use simple language, I don't know what the fuck exhort means, I mean I do now (strongly encourage or urge (someone) to do something) but I didn't. Why are you trying to make me learn!?!

Edit: TIL everyone on lemmy are fucking English majors.
