  • Any unencrypted language is crackable; if you are simply using an alphabet to obscure English, it will be immediately broken simply due to frequency analysis of the the letters and word lengths. A whole unencrypted language is harder but there will be plenty of context clues to crack it. Encryption is by far the best way to ensure privacy.

  • Gender Critical Feminism is the conceptual framework that gender is a social construct, innate gender identity doesn't exist, and biological sex is a class that causes oppression of women.

  • When this editorial came out a few days ago, I decided to cancel my WaPo subscription as the straw that broke the camel's back. I have been a subscriber for years, but I cannot deal with this ridiculous agenda they are pushing over and over again. Marriage isn't a default good thing. People should choose if they want to be married or not. If the institution is failing because women are making a feminist choice to take care of themselves, let it fail. They push this line over and over again and as someone who divorced a bad male partner, it's NOT OK.

  • This is actually quite scary that the recommendation is for children as young as 13 years old. Research shows that a lot of gender dysphoria is the result of puberty and medicalizing treatment of it creates a pipeline to further transition including surgeries, while if not treated, the dysphoria often desists after puberty. Growing up is difficult and confusing - how many of us decided we were Absolutely Something as a kid and then shrugged it off later? Something as life-changing as hormone therapy for a physically healthy child should be handled very, very carefully.

ETA: for a thoughtful discussion of these and other topics, I suggest reading Holly Lawford-Smith's book Gender Critical Feminism (extremely well cited with primary sources) and Helen Joyce's book Trans.

  • I want to point out that it's specifically Christian fascists that are the major driver of this. There is a powerful organization called Project Blitz that operates in the USA with the stated goals of removing separation of church and state, including the result of restricting abortion severely.

  • Face towels (washcloths) really only one use and then wash. Body towels I switch about once a week but I live in a dry climate and they dry fast. I also use a linen towel which is very absorbent but also dries much faster than terry. Kitchen towels I change depending on how I used them - normal use (drying hands), every couple of days. Cooking? Change after I am done cooking.

  • Current hypothesis (in the article) is that the children don't have immunity to endemic diseases after years of lockdown and are now getting sick. There doesn't seem to be the same rise in cases in adults, who probably have pre-existing immunity.

  • It is amazing how it transforms day to night. Completely unremarkable during the day, ugly even... But so cool at night.

  • I know you kid about the Pu, but that shit is so locked up it's basically non-existent.

  • Fuck yes thank you for the reminder!

  • Gravity is kind of necessary for long term human health though, at least until we figure out a way around that...

  • What a tragedy. This woman was shot dead and unceremoniously left to decompose in a storage unit. The chief suspect is her estranged male partner.

I hate the fact that this is another gun violence and male-on-female domestic violence statistic. She was a person, damn it.

  • I just crept aniki's comments, they are largely rude regardless of whether just being a jerk or actually discussing a topic. Other commenters, make of this what you will. I blocked them - no content loss.

  • Uh..so... Antisemitism? Jews in Canada don't have anything to do with Israel's decisions regarding actions in Gaza. I don't think Jews worldwide need to protest Israel's actions (playing the role of the good Jew) to avoid getting attacked.

  • Women's cycling races in Chicago area would tell a different story...along with women's swimming (Lia Thomas)...and other cases.

  • You need water to generate steam to turn a turbine and make electricity (same for coal, natural gas, fusion). However, many advanced reactor designs do not use water for the reactor coolant itself, unlike light water reactors that do. They use gas, molten salt, or liquid metals. As a result, you can get to quite high temperatures useful for process heat, such as hydrogen production. Direct desalination might also be doable, the issue/question being on the design of the non-nuclear side of the plant.

A lot of Gen IV designs are in the process of commercialization now, with demonstrations slated for later this decade.

  • Fusion designs currently require a ton of water for cooling (first wall and divertor) beyond what is needed for electricity production.
