  • Okay but in casual conversation I probably couldn't spot a really good LLM on a thread like this, but on the back end that LLM is completely incapable of learning or changing in any meaningful way, its not quite a chinese room as previously mentioned but it's still a set model that can't learn or understand context, even with infinite context memory it could still only interact with that data within the confines of the original model.

e.g. I can train the model to understand a spoon and a fork, it will never come up with that idea of a spork unless I re-train it to include the concept of sporks or directly tell it. Even after I tell it what a spork is it can't infer the properties of a spork based on a fork or a spoon without additional leading prompts by me.

  • Americans are actually a bit closer than the rest of us, e.g. erbs is the original pronounciation of herbs with the H being picked up in the UK initially by the upper classes and eventually everyone else, literally just because it sounded more grandiose, though the root latin word does include an h. (the presence of an H in english has been intermittent)

Aluminum is also closer to the intended pronounciation at least by the guy who came up with the first decent process for refining it.

  • “He's bound to have done something,” Nobby repeated.

In this he was echoing the Patrician's view of crime and punishment. If there was crime, there should be punishment. If the specific criminal should be involved in the punishment process then this was a happy accident, but if not then any criminal would do, and since everyone was undoubtedly guilty of something, the net result was that, in general terms, justice was done.”

  • Aren't jury trials statistically more likely to result in a false coviction than other trials? Given how much presentation, charisma, gender and race can influence a verdict its already about how much the jury like the defendant.

  • I feel like the modern version would be putting out the fire no matter what because it might spread to surrounding properties and then charging you for it anyway and putting a lien on the property if you can't pay.

  • The part I find extra irrationaly annoying is that moe used to refer to wholesome cuteness and they ruined it! Like someone sitting in the park with a puffer jacket and a cup of noodles just looking cozy. Lo-fi anime to study to.

  • Manged to get an ender 3V2 a few years ago, auto bed levelling is a must have feature if you intend to spend more time using your printer than calibrating or fixing it. After that masking tape fixes all adhesion problems.

  • Haven't both Taiwan and China both been stockpiling an essentially unlimited supply of long range anti-ship missiles for about a decade now? I can't imagine China having a fun time even landing troops but it'd be equally hellish for any US ships attempting to exist in the general area.
