More like - Taco is on the side of Putin and has been for a very long time.

The stupid conservatives voted for Taco even if they knew or suspected he was compromised by Russia. This is because they get a raging hard-on at the notion that Vlad is presiding over a white xtian ethnostate that hates on gays, trans, etc...they DGAF about Vlad's plans to destroy the United States.

^ This. I still am miffed at his attitude in regards to considering the issues of AI on I forget which talk show, but he took the attitude of "we'd just pull the plug".

Maybe when in a scripted format or in writing, he might be able to extrapolate a bit, but he just sounded like a layperson when it comes to the topic, and I honestly have no idea if he's read or considered the kinds of things that, say, Nick Bostrom has put out there. It just sounded like some hot take man-on-the-street kind of response, talking about the problem as if we are talking about someone's server running somewhere. It was just....facepalm.

I saw Tyson take such a dismissive attitude toward the threats of something like AI, specifically, AGI/ASI with the flippant "but we'd just shut it off!" kind of thing, it really grinded my gears.

However, I guess I'm falling into the same trap that so many do - expecting this guy to be all things to every aspect of anything that smacks of "science" and that's just not a realistic expectation. I'll stick with him on things like the re-make/update of Cosmos and ignore his random hot takes on virtually everything else. Probably also when he's putting pen to paper vs. the hot take kind of thing on a talk show. He seems to be a frequent guest on talk shows and I remember a few being quite cringe at times.

I seem to remember a certain kind of person (usually your local WELLAXKTUALLY guy) getting butthurt about the way Sagan was being held up (in their view) as the arbiter of science or something, repeating "he's not a real scientist he's just a generalist" as a constant refrain.

Fuck it, who cares. If guys like this are good at getting whole generations of people interested in science, more power to them...science could use all the PR it can get in the age of Idiocracy.

I would not be surprised if some number of online "leftists" are just cosplaying their entire persona, and some of them are paid actors.

I mean, if you go into some corners like BoingBoing's BBS before it was shut down, you might get the impression that the only leftists worthy of being platformed and heard from were ticking multiple Oppression Olympics checkboxes. Anyone that differed with this set on even minor points were to be silenced, possibly banned, and then ridiculed. You know, for things like not "checking their privilege".

People used to joke about things like Communist "struggle sessions" and how absurdist they sounded. These struggle sessions are only online right now, and I think a lot of it is artifice of trolls/bots/paid actors and/or people blowing themselves up into something more important than they really are - the power of moderation really went to their heads, probably. But if a casual Democratic voter runs across that? Or the normies/low-info? They are going to think that all the crazy stuff Rush and Faux and Bullshit Mountain has been saying about the left is right...

....which Cletus won't read either.

Someone on the BoingBoing subreddit in one of the threads about the ridiculous moderation at BoingBoing's BBS said they got a lifetime ban for calling another poster crazy (after the other poster suggested they should be raped).

I mean....when we have purity ponies like this running some of the more powerful/prominent corners of the 'net, it's like the left doesn't want to ever win any elections. Granted, BoingBoing has probably fallen very far in its reach in recent years, but still. It's not like this insular circle jerk/circular firing squad mentality has disappeared. If anything, this type of leftist seems to be some of the most vocal and some of the very first types someone is likely to run across on the 'net (would not be surprised if commercial sites don't push this kind of content intentionally and contrast it with red-pill stuff from the brosphere at the same time).

For a great example of this, I'll point at the BBS comment section for BoingBoing. I honestly think the boingboing subreddit was made to freely talk about the terrible situation at BoingBoing, because open discussion sure wasn't going to happen on BoingBoing itself...I saw someone say they got a ban for calling some other poster crazy after the other poster made a death or a rape threat?

But yeah, when it comes to an absurd circle jerk followed by a circular firing squad, I've definitely seen it. It's like there is a certain segment of lefties that want to lose elections forever.

Ironically, BoingBoing took their comment section behind a paywall at substack, so I'm sure paying to comment is bringing in lots of diverse views, LOL. 🤣
