No. He was dead numerous times and other people took up the mantle. Most notable Dick Grayson.
I don't know how it is in the games, but in the comics he was originally someone who lived in the same world as the old Spider-Man and took up the mantle. Peter Parker wasn't replaced as a character, he was just dead.
For some people, there are only ever two sides, one all good, one all bad and there can not be people in-between or on each side that aren't 100% a walking trope integrated with all traits of the "side". It's quite sad really.

Yeah, people think "smart" is a point on a linear scale from "stupid" to "educated". In Germany we say "Fachidioten" ("subject idiots") for people that are well versed in a subject, but idiots otherwise. You can study something, even be good in that and still talk bullshit.
