  • Melbourne roads shenanigans: No idea what's changed between afternoon and evening today.

Drivers were quite well behaved last night and this afternoon compared to other times.

Tonight on my way to pick up my wife:

    • nearly got rear ended by a tradie in a ute at the red light. He was quite pissed at me for stopping behind and not next to a fuel tanker road train (two trailers) around a bend. He tail gated me until I turned off
    • BMW sedan did a half burnout sort of thing on Lygon St. Pretty sure they reached 60-70 in the 40kmh zone.
    • A large ute pretty much pushed two pedestrians while doing a right turn. He drove off, his passenger laughing his ass off.
  • Lemmy is still somewhat rough around the edges I guess. It's a bit clunky on my browser, and I can't login at all if I use my remote terminal (which is often times the only choice when on poor Indonesian mobile networks)

On another note, nice to see you here on Lemmy Melbaboutown, welcome. :D

  • Okay. In the context of roaming, receiving SMSes are free. This applies to all carriers, and in most cases you'll be able to receive SMSes as long as your SIM card is able to register on the local networks.

Receiving/making calls, sending SMSes, and using data will incur charges - in case of prepaid, the actions (other than receiving SMSes) will simply fail if you don't have an active roaming paket.

That being said, on Telstra you could just disable your day pass and you'll still be able to receive SMSes, just not do anything else while overseas, which is what I did during my recent trip back home. Not sure about Optus/Vodafone as I don't use them.

  • Today's Melbourne road shenanigan:

    • Picked up some friends from Emporium. Immediately witness a massive 57 seater Mercedes coach get stuck trying to make a left turn from Elizabeth onto Lonsdale, and we all watched on as it spent the next 10 minutes awkwardly and dangerously reversing and trying again around pedestrians before finally managing to complete the turn with the help of the nearby tradies.

On another note, my right foot is sore today after hovering over (not pressing/resting on) the accelerator and instead letting the car's radar take care of the speed for most of yesterday's trip.

  • Today on Melbourne roads:

    • Bicycle rider jumping a speed bump on the wrong side of the road nearly hit us.
    • Doing 105 on the Calder overtaking a bunch of cars doing 90. SUV towing a caravan cuts me off and proceeds to fish tail and nearly lost control a few times.
    • Tonight also on the Calder. Absolutely pissing down so most of us were cruising at 80kmh. Except for that muppet who decided that he could fly past at maybe 120.
    • Doing 80 on a very quiet rural road of some sort. No idea what I did wrong but a bird somehow managed to land a massive shit on our windshield. Of all the places and time they could've shitted, it had to be on us driving past under the tree.
  • Thanks Thornburywitch :) will check this one too. We might give Lerdeberg a pass actually until later due to the general consensus being a challenging hike (and our fitness levels are relatively substandard)

  • Looking to travel in the west/northwest direction this weekend.

    Last time we went east.

Any stop recommendations please, less than 100km from the Melbourne CBD and emphasis on nature/forests?

Currently have Mount Macedon and Lerderderg State Park in mind, but will probably just go to one of them.
