You are reading into this post a bit too deeply and inferring a lot of things from my post that I never said. I am not forcing my partner into this and they have not expressed disinterest.
Why not just try to get it to run on your machine?
I wanted to gauge the level of effort involved first. I easily can sink hours into tinkering something and getting it to eventually work but sometimes it isn't worth it.
I read a forum post back in the day about a guy that forced his wife and kids to use FreeBSD and they hated it. It was pretty funny but I also don't want to be that guy
I see this as a plus. People have a right to be forgotten. The problem nowadays is that companies track you and keep all your data forever and then use it to advertise to you.
At the very least, data collection and preservation should be explicitly opt-in.
If you really want to save something, download it yourself.

Who gives a shit what people wear? Just because you don't like something doesn't mean it should be banned. People like to cry about the nanny state and then go all in for regulating things that personally offend them yet ultimately cause no harm.
Interesting, thanks for the link - at the very least, things are trending upwards so fingers crossed we are through the worst of it for the time being. Which is probably 8-10 years, it is cyclical.
This is aimed at the person i originally responded to. General thoughts about about political agendas couched in loaded language below. Nothing is apolitical, and everyone has an agenda. The key is to figure out what it is.
"Worst recession since 2008" is one of those phrases that sounds almost like the economy is just as bad as 2008, but actually doesn't mean much of anything.
For demonstrative purposes I'll use some arbitrary numbers here.
If we rated the 2008 recession at an 10/10 on the badness scale, rated any recession between 2009-2022 as a 2/10 at the most, and rated the current recession we're in at say, a 4 - I could say that this is the worst recession since 2008, and it would not be untruthful.
A new federated platform that is self-run, hosts your identity only and allows you to interact from websites from your own app on your own phone or computer, to start. None of this signing up 500 trillion accounts for each and every website garbage.
But Lemmy can literally do this. I am doing it right now. I'm the only user on my instance.
Well, that's the problem, isn't it? A company should not be promoting Christmas and then banning any mention of non-christian holidays. Just don't mention them at all then
