  • Ignoring the snark in your comment...

I assume you take issue with UBI?

Would you feel different if we 'required service' for UBI? For example, some countries have mandatory military service. If we nationalize these giant corporations, we could make working there a way to qualify for UBI.

Do you think UBI is just taking money from the average person and giving it to lazy people who do nothing? Or do you enjoy the separation of the rich while the rest of us struggle for scraps? Do you understand that the UBI would apply to you as well?

Or am I missing deeper thoughts given to your comment?

  • How would there be thousands? There aren't thousands of nations, and everyone would still use Google.

If you break it up, that's how you get thousands of shitty versions.

Maybe some countries might disable Google if it was owned by the US, but I have a feeling those countries already have their own issues with Google as it stands now.

I just think if the monopolistic corporations are too big and too essential to take down, then nationalization is a solution with many more positive traits than negative.

  • This last winter I was unemployed and I got sick enough to need antibiotics.

I couldn't prove that I didn't have a job, so the 'sliding scale clinic' charged me $586 to talk to someone (not a doctor). I knew what I needed. I was forced to take an unnecessary STD test ($180) and to promise I would go in for additional testing and scanning (undisclosed price, to be determined AFTER).

The meds were around $40 for a week of pills (15 pills).

I knew my issue, and just needed a prescription for the antibiotics.

I have a job now. They want about $200 a month for the basic coverage. I have on average, $20-$30 at the end of the pay period. So I could get insurance, but it means skipping more meals (I already skip several a week to save money).

So I just hope nothing ever goes wrong because if it does, I'll need to be close to death before I get help that will take me years to pay for.

  • I think what they may be trying to say is that the majority of Trump supporters are not the rabid followers. This is why they are so dangerous. The majority of his support is not the crazy people you see on TV. They are your friends, family and coworkers, your neighbors, people you know.

Trump is selling a solution to the political corruption that nearly EVERYONE is sick of. This is what makes him popular. The people voting for him will tolerate non-direct racism but they aren't choosing that side because of it. What you hear about from the media is the crazy people that make good stories.

And yes, Trump brings along a con-crew with their own agenda who are just as corrupt as those that Trump complains about. They've been scheming long before Trump, he's just the current tool.

  • I once said that children who steal can be rehabilitated or taught to be productive members of society.

Downvoted to oblivion while everyone else celebrated the death of 3 kids because "all thieves deserve to die".

  • I subscribed to all sorts of newsletters, and at least one was dinosaur specific. I would also write professors at local colleges with questions and usually get a response.

Also worked at the library and could order just about any book available. At that point most libraries would order books if they didn't have them already.

But mostly newsletters and science journals until BBS became more common and user friendly when we first started having available computers.

  • Hoping to hear an answer to this.

As someone who saved literal cases of gaming mags from the 90s-00s I'm ready to part with them hoping someone else will go through the effort to scan them and make them available. I just don't have the time or resources for that project and I've got a storage unit FULL of gaming gear that I need to empty. It's hard enough to go through the games and hardware, I just want to get rid of the boxes and boxes ofabysls and magazines but I don't want to trash them.

  • I did maintenance for a low income building. They would have me upgrade specific units so they could Airbnb them while they denied low income applications to keep those units empty. Disabled people who needed housing were denied because it was more profitable to leave it empty and rent it out to tourists a few times a month.

We also didn't do maintenance on specific units in order to get tenants to move out. There was a specific unit that was given to new tenants that would routinely flood. They used it to get rid of people that complained too much. If you only complained a little and cooperated with their bs, you could eventually move to a unit that stayed dry all year.

  • Here's what makes me roll my eyes...

Most of the people making these comments won't make a bit of effort in their own lives to make a difference for the planet and humans overall. Sure, recycling is still pretty messed up, but we can't even get people to put trash in a bin. They certainly aren't willing to consume less or put effort into creating less waste in the first place. And I'm willing to bet money that if they suddenly had a private plane and that kind of money they would be doing exactly the same thing.

It's a 'fuck you I got mine' world, and most people are happily stepping on their neighbors hoping to get above the mass. I don't know how to fix people, but if we can stop supporting the systems that are pushing us down that'd be a huge step in the right direction.
