  • Most of the space heaters that I've seen are like 1,500 watts. According to the UPS this computer is plugged into, it consumes around 650 watts. So it's not as powerful as a space heater, but when the exhaust is pointed directly at your legs, it gets plenty warm.

  • Instead of using a space heater like everyone else, I run Folding@Home on one of my work machines to pump out a few hundred watts of heat. That way at least someone is getting some Alzheimer's research out of burning that electricity.

  • Last I checked, Homo erectus didn't spend a lot of time walking around on concrete. Nor did they have bicycles.

No matter the mode of transportation, in a built up environment where you're moving on smooth surfaces where ice can form easily, you need some form of de-icing, sanding, and/or studded tires/shoes.

  • A good wool suit is quite insulating. I wore a 3 piece wool suit this summer when it was a bit warm. I wasn't really sweating any more than I would be if I was wearing shorts and a Tee shirt.

  • Yes. Which is one of the many reasons why he's a piece of shit.

The point I was making is that not having a Democratic majority in the Senate allows the Republicans to pull stupid shit like not confirming appointments, not letting any bills be voted on, and by letting a turtle run the Senate. When we lose Manchin, we'll be in a situation where the Republicans could prevent any judicial confirmations from happening, assuming they pick up 2 seats.

  • No, this is a bad idea. This will unfairly punish poorer Congress m (like AOC and Bernie Sanders).

Mitt Romney has enough money to survive not being paid for a few days or weeks. Honestly, Mitt Romney's congressional pay is a drop in the ocean that is his vast net worth.

AOC really depends on her congressional salary to be able to afford basic stuff. Cutting off that money could be devastating for poor members of Congress. They could lose their house (singular) or be unable to pay other bills.

At best, cutting off congressional pay will discourage not wealthy people from running for office. At worst, it could be used as a weapon by the right to punish representatives they don't like.

Instead, we should prevent Congress members from leaving the capitol building until they pass a budget. Not for food. Not to go home and sleep. Not for a walk. This'll affect everyone evenly, and will probably be more motivating after a couple of days.

  • The difference is being able to confirm judicial appointments. We have Gorsuch on the SC because the Republicans had a majority in the Senate and wouldn't confirm Obama's appointment.

Manchin is a coal dust covered piece of shit, but he's the least shitty senator WV will probably ever send to the Senate. Don't let perfection be the enemy of progress not going backwards.

  • Even if we ignore abortion and only look at what Thune is talking about, suburbanites would still be stupid to vote for them.

Economy? Republicans will cut taxes on the super wealthy and screw over everyone.

Jobs? They'll cut regulations that keep me safe at work.

Cost of living? They'll subsidize fossil fuels more, and screw everyone in the long run. They'll probably just lie about everything else.

Public safety? They'll give cops more money so cops continue to be shit while being paid more. And/or they'll toss more people in jail without providing any sort of treatment which will make the whole situation worse.

The border? They'll waste money to build some stupid wall and prevent desperate people from seeking asylum. Plus, the border "situation" does affect the vast majority of Americans.

Unless you're an evil billionaire cackling in your hollowed out volcano, voting Republican is voting against your best interests.

  • I agree. I've also gotten shafted by used cars (7th generation Honda Civics are all utter pieces of garbage). I don't take depreciation into account on a new car because I plan on driving it until it's uneconomical to repair, which means it'll be worthless when I sell it regardless.

My parents have only purchased one used car, and it was a nearly new car from someone they knew and trusted. The other 4 cars they've bought in the past 40 years have been new. They keep them until they're old and basically worthless.

  • Thankfully it's changing a bit. I've noticed that newer Ford and Dodge full sized pickups use amber turn signals. I assume that these vehicles don't sell very well in places that require amber turn signals (Europe).

Meanwhile, VW, Audi, BMW, Land Rover, and Mercedes all modify their amber European turn signals to red to sell in the US. For some reason, they go out of their way to make 2 parts instead of 1 for many of their models.

I think it's a styling thing rather than a cost thing now. Back when taillights in the US were a single bulb on each side, cost was a driving factor. Now with complex LED taillights, I think it's something else keeping amber out of our indicators.

  • When I was a kid, I somehow managed to breathe through my pillow. Or I'd prop up my forehead on the pillow and rest my chin on the mattress which left enough room to breathe.

Now as an adult, when I do sleep on my stomach, my head is turned to the side. My neck is horribly crooked, but that doesn't seem to bother me. In fact, when I fall asleep, I apparently roll onto my back, and tilt my head to the side (perpendicular to the rest of my body). My wife has told me I'm a creepy sleeper since it looks like my neck is broken or is at an absurd angle. I somehow never wake up with neck pain.
