It's a pretty complicated economics question why inflation is happening. They're working on it by adjusting interest rates, I guess.

As for why the average American isn't doing so well, it's basically the rich getting richer while the poor get poorer. If this same inflation was happening with a 70's distribution of wealth (and IIRC it actually did) it wouldn't be fun but it wouldn't be pushing so many people to the brink, either.

It won't be a game changer, I'm afraid. It will basically enable them to keep doing the same thing sustainably, but F-16s still have a shortage of range compared to top Russian jets and can't fight back when they show up. Gripens might be a bigger deal, but Turkey isn't letting the Swedes into NATO yet.

For 2024, if the war ends, it will be thanks to the Russians giving up or politically imploding.

I'm guessing it was just yet another way to bring up the carbon tax. If PP wins it'll be interesting to see how he governs, because he's been pretty serious about making everything an opposition campaign stop, including critical cooperation with Ukraine.

Yep. Small ones that still hosted communities also had a high attrition rate - I was in some of them.

The big stuff has transferred quite nicely, as have tech communities, but other niche communities seem to have floundered. Even ones that explicitly and openly made the switch died off, like r/streetphotography. It seems raw user count is pretty critical to supporting them.

For a war historian, maybe. From an ethical culpability perspective I think it's fair. Hitler started that thing and dragged everyone else along kicking and screaming.

Maybe WWII would have happened "spontaneously" the same way WWI did eventually, but Europe was still getting over the first one, and so it was a couple decades away at least.

Weird, because somehow, every time that every time communism has been tried, it involved massive genocide, though perhaps one could argue that the majority of it was the result of incompetency, because the majority of the victims starved to death as a result of disastrous agricultural policies.

Genocide has to be at least a bit deliberate, and generally they just fucked up their economy bad enough agriculture was negatively effected. In the USSR's case at least, the starvation affected the republics pretty equally, too. As Ukrainians were starving so were Khazaks. For political reasons, some parties have tried to make it sound like a targeted ethnic thing, but it just wasn't, and it certainly wasn't on purpose.

Edit: Also, I take issue with not counting all of WWII as part of the Nazi death count, since they very deliberately made it happen. Consider this was in the space of just a few years, vs. an entire human lifetime for the Soviets.

Yeah, it's not a fair comparison. You can say it's a dumb ideology but at the end of the day it's close cousins with big-L Liberalism, and often has been first to the social ideas we hold dear today.

They got banned because lemmy.ml is also a communist-run instance. The mods could have taken the high road and just replied, I guess, but that would have been extraordinary patience. So, they banned the person calling them a Nazi, and I don't think that was an unreasonable choice on their part.

Basic income - probably at right where our minimum wage is now - would be my solution to the poverty at the other end. Honestly that's more important, but it didn't really fit into the format of my post so well.

Some other assorted economic policies on my wish list: Publicly-funded elections, the end of restrictive residential zoning, bigger carbon taxes right around the social cost, very open economic immigration policy, a government sponsored system for opening up intellectual property, and maybe some sort of single-payer law system because it's a bit shit you can buy justice sometimes.

A lot of people would call me a communist for this. Communists are currently telling me I'm an idiot in another thread. Thankfully we live in an open society where I can just do my own thing and it doesn't matter.

I don't actually know the answer to that one. I'd guess it's permanent, though. That being said, Lemmy's been built on a lot since I last looked at the source code.
