  • I learned negative as being a separate operation where we need to apply the order of operations. I think it was something like : -2 is a diminutive for -1x2 so it uses the order of operations of a multiplication.
My calculator is the official one used in schools in France (ti-83 premium ce) and it says -2^2 = -4 with the negative key. I don't think it would make a mistake in such a simple concept.

But whatever these concepts can change depending on the field, country, level of education. What I mean is : it's unclear, so use parentheses. So (-2)2 or -(22) are the correct ways to write it.

  • Isn't the "-" order of operations the same as a multiply ? I think I learned powers take priority over the "-" so your calculator would be right.
But either way if it can cause confusion you should use parentheses.

  • It's in a mid size city, I guess culture is quite different in Montreal. And of course for age verification I could use a passport or ID but Facebook is common for this.
For the package notification it's how my building works.

  • I didn't even have an account when I lived in France because only old people used it, and I didn't understand the billions users figures either.

But since I live in canada I need facebook to do anything, everyone uses it. If I want to get in a bar, they ask me for my Facebook to check my age. When I get a package I only get notified on Facebook. News by my school are only published on Facebook...

  • Yes, I think EVs in general (and especially hybrids) are a way to justify not investing in alternative modes of transportation for cities.

As for users you feel good about being "clean", but in reality you are still polluting 10x as much as with public transportation.

  • I have both a full EV that can be charged on any standard power plug and a classic gas car. I barely ever use the gas, and only use the EV because of how much cheaper it is. I would've expected everyone to do the same, but maybe as you said gas is not expensive enough for most people so they don't care.

  • Wow I knew hybrids were not that great and WLTP would be off, but 250% off how is that even possible? There's practically no difference between plug-in hybrids and standard cars.

Edit : So people are buying plug-in hybrids and just not charging it- why ?
