  • If it were anyone but Musk's company I might be excited at the prospects of this tech.

  • So far Pocketpair has been VERY careful about actually infringing on copyright or trademarks. People smarter than I am are pretty certain that if Nintendo or the Pokemon Company could take legal action against the game as it is, they would have already. The important things to note are that you cannot copyright an art style and you cannot copyright or patent game mechanics. And even if things were touch and go, the gameplay loop of adding survival elements and an emphasis on cooperative guild base management is pretty transformative compared to Pokemon games. So as long as they avoid adding pals that are so close to their Pokemon counterparts that they don't pass the squint test they will be alright.

  • Thanks for the video! Those are some worrying trends in devices for sure

  • It's hard to come up with ideas without any context, ESPECIALLY nitty gritty. So instead I'll try to start with a few frameworks that could be built upon. Maybe my ideas are bad. Maybe they are interesting. Everyone can judge for themselves. But I'm going for framework and inspiration here of how to start. I hope someone finds it interesting enough to take a thread and run with it.

You could have a magic system that's based around breaking current physics which might feel grounded (like you know internally that a magic alters quantum wave functions and influences physical outcomes as a result for instance, or just stick with the good ol' air earth water fire that people are already familiar with and will understand immediately). That would put limits on what your magic could or couldn't do and make it feel plausible or at least consistent. It would also be easier to set a power level to since it's already by nature restricted.

You could also choose more narrative inspired system which might be less cohesive but allow for bigger moments with your characters. Just imagine a cinematic moment. Your protagonist is on their last legs. The BBEG has hordes of minions overrunning the towns and cities. One of the protagonists friends embraces them and as tears fall the BBEG prepares to annihilate them. Call back to a scene where you foreshadow this moment and as the protag remembers that scene they find within themselves the strength repel the BBEG. Or maybe they can teleport away with their friend, or maybe they sacrifice themselves to destroy the BBEG in a metaphysical explosion. The specifics of that would be yours to craft but the moment you design would inform the 'magic' required. To make a system like this I would imagine a few different impactful moments that would be super fun to have in the story and their magical effects. Make these just about the top end of what magic can do in your world and then start scaling down to a more reasonable level. And now start thinking about how people would use the scaled down stuff in their day to day lives.

It might be interesting to allow for the balancing and OP-ness of the system to be restricted by sacrifice to the characters. Maybe there's no real limit to magic aside from how much of yourself you're willing to give up. Perhaps giving your entire body and soul could cause a magical effect of a certain power level. Maybe if two people cast it together, sacrificing both of themselves it would be more. The good side could quickly go down a dark path trying to out muscle the BBEG.

You could also go the route of taking inspiration from RPG systems like Shadowrun, Dungeons and Dragons, Call of Cthulhu. I'm definitely NOT saying copy those systems, but you could take from DND the concept of doing a ritual each day to be able to have access to certain stuff. Or maybe you like the idea of casting spells taking a physical toll on the caster as it does in Shadowrun. Or maybe accessing the arcane drives one made like in CoC.

So sorry I don't think I can get into nitty gritty details but hopefully something in this sparks some inspiration. And if not, at least it can rule some stuff out!

  • Dang, this is such a cool project and it's a shame this is happening to it. It's understandable that Valve wants to be nowhere near Nintendo's proprietary libraries though. I hope this isn't the end of the project full stop.

  • We're on a streak! Gotta keep this ball rolling

  • "Tracking Protection" just means they are protecting their exclusivity in tracking you.

  • Market share doesn't equal irrelevance as others have said. I use Librewolf and without Firefox it wouldn't exist. It likely wouldn't exist at the quality it is without Mozilla taking Google Cash either. But it's super important to have an alternative even if most people don't use it. It DOES provide a limited check and balance against google doing whatever they want with the web because if the right people make the right noise then people will move over to something that's easy, convenient, and free of whatever pain in the butt google puts in chrome that sends people over the edge. See Linux desktop and Valve for an example of how a software with very few users comparatively can force a larger company to play ball. Remember in Windows 8 when MS basically banned 3rd party software stores on the OS.. or tried? And Valve made the "Steam Machine" and SteamOS? Everyone says the steam machines failed but they 100% did everything Valve wanted them to do. It was enough to have MS go back on their walled garden and allow Steam to keep operating as it had been. And now we have the steam deck on top of it.

So, it's ok if Firefox has a small market share as long as it remains a worthy competitor.

  • For when you don't want your friends to know when you're playing hentai games.

  • Rollie Williams is a treasure. Thanks for linking the Climate Town video here, it's super relevant.

  • lol I remember that episode!

  • We're going to fix traffic I swear

  • I think I may not have made my position clear. If there is 1 Nazi at the table, and 9 people are just sitting with them hanging out... you have 10 Nazis. They are not "doing the hard work" otherwise it the 1 Nazi would not be sitting there. I'm hearing a lot of sympathizing towards Nazis in this thread.

  • Yes. I don't care if they feel oppressed. Tolerance does not extend to Nazis. They SHOULD feel oppressed. I will not entertain being soft on Nazis. I will not entertain "seeing both sides". I will not entertain Nazis.

  • This is too complex and nuanced. You punch the nazi and throw them out of the establishment. That's it. That's all.

  • Look. If there are 9 people at a table sitting with 1 Nazi and hanging out, there are 10 Nazis.

  • It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Remember for the first half of the year every new release competed with the last to be "the worst release of all time". The second half of the year was spectacular though!

  • Bring back physical media! We have plex and jellyfin to serve our own streaming needs and they can't take the discs away from us.
