  • About 8 years ago, I moved from the red state I was born to a progressive city. I let my daughter serve her first year of school there then said oh hell no and got the fuck out.

Just remember rule number 1: Get hired first, then move

  • Kids are getting an unhealthy amount of screen time. An unbelievable number of parents are not doing anything about it at home (well, maybe it's believable; they're addicted, too). Phones are becoming increasingly more addictive year by year as marketers learn new tricks to capture brain time.

Kids brains are still developing and social interaction plays an important role. As the teacher says in the article, phone bans result in more face to face student interactions and less work avoidance. Many schools that are implementing bans lately also reference a study that demonstrated having a cell phone even in pocket or in reach distracted students thoughts (how many times have you checked time/notifications, then absent mindedly checked again within a minute?)

Safety wise, I don't buy that kids having their phone in a school shooting situation would help anything. Every classroom has a phone, MOST of which these days have a built-in "lockdown" button that immediately signals police and triggers a school wide lockdown announcement. My bigger fear is how many will make their main character selfie blogs that we've seen come from bigger high schools during shootings or crying to their parents on the phone when really they need to be silent and not endangering everyone else. I get that parents want to know right now that their kids haven't been shot, but that information doesn't do anything to help the situation.

The only case where this gets iffy is when the building is evacuated and phones are left behind. This is especially problematic as people no longer know each other's phone numbers and couldn't simply borrow a phone to contact family.

In the end, the day to day is what really matters. I'm not a fan of the districts that hyper focus on safety structures when building community and a welcoming environment should be the focus of a school.

  • The message was part of a bulleted list of "best practices", sandwiched between "don't go anywhere alone" and "practice de-escalation" so I'm pretty certain they were afraid of being harassed or attacked.

  • I will still feel better if the investigations reveal it was due to safety from being attacked SEVERAL TIMES by the stupid asses in the trump camp. FEMA workers have a right to feel safe while doing their job. I hope the investigation also comes with a list of reported harassment, because I haven't seen a comprehensive one yet

  • The problem is that some men will literally tell a woman anything they want to hear until they're in bed. They will lie their ass off and avoid political discussion until after the proposal, then they'll suggest maybe she could cook a little more

  • They're literally going to point to anything the EU does and say "Oh! Gotta pull out of NATO now!" They'll even make up shit that EU didn't do (probably like this fake ass threat letter) as excuse.

They intend to get out if they can, unless they get unilateral control, in order to strengthen Russia.

  • The brainwashed thinks that if industry had less red tape, they'd be able to innovate more, let the market decide pay and hiring, and cost us less taxes in monitoring. All despite history proving that it only leads to the rich getting richer and more powerful while everyone else becomes peasants.

That's why all Trump voters are just dumbfucks. Some of them think they're the strong men that will get to take advantage of the weak in this system, but they're really just dumb sheep that tongue a butthole up to middle management at best. They're the ones who picked on special needs kids at school because punching down is easy and they need a win.

  • I've tried mastodon and followed a couple people. But I never did Twitter either. Could you recommend how I could best use mastodon? Who to follow, or for to sort/search out whatever what's popular? I couldn't figure it out
