  • It's simple, easily customisable, and I like the big chiseled buttons.

  • It really is mwm :) The toolchest-like menu in the upper left corner isn't part of mwm though.

You can find more info about the mwm fork here: https://fastestcode.org/emwm.html

  • I use Debian with a patched version of motif window manager. The 90s never ended:

  • I still use both. 99% of Usenet is spam, but there still a few active groups (especially under comp.*). The BBS scene on the other hand, is booming. I see new users every week on my favourite board.

  • I find the hot/active categories pretty confusing too. It would be nice to be able to show subbed communities either across the top of the page or on a sidebar like old Reddit.

  • There is no engagement algorithm; it's us :)

  • I use Debian because it's what I've been using for the last twenty-two years.

  • Firefox + uBlock Origin + Reader View

  • Yo, a couple years ago I had become fed up with the state of the modern Internet, and I started looking for alternatives. This is what I have found so far:

    • Gopher protocol (sdf.org is pretty active)
    • Gemini protocol (Modern version of gopher)
    • Shared UNIX systems (also called tildes) sdf.org is great!
    • RSS
    • IRC/Matrix to chat with people
    • Session messenger to chat with family
    • BBSes via syncterm
    • wiby.me and marginalia.nu search engines to find personal web sites
    • oldavista.com to browse the 'Old Net'
    • Web forums
    • Neocities
    • Webrings (They still exist!)
    • Lemmy (This is a new one)

The next step for me will be to build my own personal site. The only way to keep the independent web alive is to participate in it.
