  • Glad you mentioned that. It can be very hard on the body, and for older people they will likely want to transition into ownership, or a supervisory or admin role...and those slots are limited.

We need to think about using technology to help people work less. Not just fatten profits.

  • This is damned impressive.

  • Agree. We need trades people but we also need jobs, re-shoring, affordable housing, affordable health care, affordable education, etc. to go along with. It could become another bubble like pharmacists and knowledge workers.

The longer I'm in the workforce the more I think David Graeber was right.

  • "Go to trade school" is my guess. I've even suggested it. I'm not sure it's really being over pushed, but maybe it is. Easy answers to complex questions are a trope.

  • The anti-reflective (AR) coating can create blue or purple reflections from certain angles. The coating is meant to block some of the UV spectrum of light to help protect your peepers. It also prevents some of the reflections that would be annoying, hence the name.

  • Your experiences are anecdotal. They don't tell us anything about the performance of all public servants. Perspective is important.

  • BGE soundtrack is so good.

  • I get this question a lot, since my wife and I always vote in person. The place where we vote is right around the corner from us, a 2 minute walk. We go mid morning and there's never a line. It's just more fun for us, kind of a tradition. The same poll workers have been there for several years and it's always nice to see them.

As microscopically unimportant as our two votes are in the big picture, they are still important to us.

If I still lived in some of the places I did in the past, I would definitely mail it in. Those places always had a long wait.

  • Looks like you're right. They may have updated this since I last tried it.

  • Fastmail lets you create masked email addresses. They are randomized and can't be linked to your main account. Great way to track who sells your email to spammers. You can create a new masked email for each temporary need and tag it. You can also disable them individually, so you stop receiving mail for that fake sddress.

  • Hair care product

  • Some folks iron their hair with a heated electrical device called a straightener. You could try one. I don't think they are expensive. Read all of the directions and be careful. YouTube is maybe useful here, too.

A chemical treatment called a relaxer can also help do what you want, but proceed with great caution. I understand not wanting to pay for hair care. I cut my own as well. But, some things are best left to a pro. Relaxers are alkaline, and chemical burns are easily possible. Some may contain formaldehyde, which is nasty stuff. Long-term use is probably a bad idea, IMHO.

  • For whatever it's worth, I've had some very positive interactions on here, too. And I've seen questions answered when people needed help. And generally useful info types of posts. The comics and memes are often good (if you like those, those are not everyone's cup of tea). Anyway, it's not all jackasses all the time on Lemmy.

  • I'm also starting to think social media plus human nature = inherently bad combo. It's not always bad, but it trends that way over time and at large scales.

Real identity social media is bad because creepy corporations track your every move and people post fake and highly curated profiles.

Anonymous social media is bad because too many people behave like unfiltered belligerent asholes.

  • There is indeed a LOT of bitchy pedantry on here. I'm not sure it's worse than other platforms, because this is the only one I've been using for a while now. I block very aggressively and that seems to help.

Sorry you're not having fun on Lemmy, I do get it. For some reason reddit keeps failing upwards and we're not getting the influx of users I was hoping for. I'm still hanging in here but participating less and less.

  • We love our moral panics here in the US. Especially Satanic panics.

  • When the weather is nice like it is this year, we put a table and chairs out on our driveway and decorate it. We sit there and have a drink and pass out candy. It's more fun than answering the door, and we end up chatting with neighbors and parents. Our next door neighbors did the same thing as us this year, and it was even more fun, as they were right next to us hanging out.
