Which brings me back to my original question of why two countries suddenly closed the matter. What is your bar for who gets to decide what the truth is? Is it based on the size of the population they serve? GDP? Years as a country?

Media has always had a long history of getting people to look by stirring the pot a little bit. Pitchfork indulged to varying degrees. But in many ways, they were just responding to what hipster culture demanded. Hipsters consider themselves discerning, able to see “beyond” what the masses see. They have a high opinion of their intelligence and assessment. So pitchfork, as an outlet catering to hipsters, couldn’t just go with the flow and agree. They needed to say something that made them look discerning or intelligent. Which often came out as bizarre.

Unfortunately, the easiest way to look discerning is to say something is bad when everybody likes it. The far braver stance is to throw your weight behind a piece of media that most people don’t like (not for no reason of course, otherwise you’re just being contrarian in the other direction). And hipsters are rarely brave enough to do that.

I appreciate the compliment, but I think your “look don’t touch” comparison is even more appropriate haha. There was definitely a culture of “you’re not allowed to enjoy anything“ that came with being a hipster. You “appreciate it,” you discern from one album to another and you just reject certain elements.

God forbid if you just like one song by an artist. Don’t even bring it up lol

I have joined revolt servers purely based on size just to see if anything was happening, and every single one of them was basically dead, especially anything with a focus. At most I will see one or two people talking. Makes it very hard to hang around on a daily basis.

Are there any servers you know that have decent activity?

Like most things hipster in the late 2000’s/early 2010’s, it was really cool to like pitchfork, and then it was determined that too many people liked pitchfork, so to prove you really liked music you had to say you didn’t like pitchfork.

Well, I think people need to be a little patient with folks who use terms like “dumb” and “moron,” by it behooves you to maybe consider why people are bringing that up now.

It’s kind of like the R word. Mocking people for things they can’t control, especially things with a history of leading to persecution, is not OK. “Moron” unfortunately does have a very troubled history as a term so they aren’t wrong. Same reason I am trying not to use words like “crazy” when describing people’s behavior.

Why should I bother trying to educate you when you won’t even leave the article you’re arguing over?

Puberty blockers have been well-studied and widely-used since the late 1980s. They have been routinely used to pause puberty in adolescents experiencing gender dysphoria, treat children who enter puberty too early and help adults living with a range of other medical conditions.

It is utterly bizarre to me out of all the misnomers and ridiculous (sometimes offensive) terms out there in the media/hobby world, I see “boomer shooter” complained about so much more than any other. This is like the third rant I’ve seen about it in a week.

I thought Twitter and such were making a mountain out of a mole hill with how people responded to the term “Boomer“ in past years but clearly it ruffles peoples feathers way more than it should. Half the time I go through the comment histories and these are the same people that use ableist slurs regularly. I am not suggesting that OP does, I have not looked at their comments. Just a general observation.

That is what was so upsetting about last summer. I had a lot invested in Reddit. Emotionally, mentall, hell just time-wise. After the “landed gentry“ comment, I just couldn’t deal with it anymore. It was so disrespectful and completely missed the mark for why most moderators do what they do. Like I get it, many people dog moderators and think they’re just “power tripping jannies.” But fact of the matter is most moderators are perfectly fine people just volunteering their time to foster a community they care about.

So for the CEO of a company whose entire existence is owed to the labor of unpaid users that they never talk to or interact with in any meaningful way outside of a handful of mod teams to come out and call us “entitled” and other adjectives because we are protesting a terrible decision and advocating for people with disabilities…well, many of us left lol

I know what Reddit was. I was a moderator for a sizable sub for many years lol you’re not going to get any disagreement from me there. None of what you wrote above is incompatible with what I wrote. You need to think of it in relative terms. I am not saying that Reddit is some truly authentic experience, far from it. But if you’re looking for legitimate answers to your hobby/technical/fandom questions, name a site that comes even close that 1) isn’t exponentially worse/more corporate dominated and/or 2) is actually big enough to get responses.

Discord is the next closest thing because of how servers are set up but it’s a terrible repository for information because you need to be invited (no google searching/indexing) and structurally you can’t find anything that’s more than like 5min old.
