Honestly, I don't think that would have stopped anything. One thing made abundantly clear to me from my time in that particular BoE is that the vocal minority literally could not care less. There were more people than I would have imagined griping and complaining that the busses weren't running to their area, despite the fact it is ultimately the parent's responsibility, and also despite the fact that they themselves weren't willing to grab an S endorsement and do the job themselves for not only their child but other people's as well.

And don't get me wrong, parents should have been notified and honestly this should have been trialed before opening day. But this would still be an article and people would still be up in arms because, sadly, it's often the loudest in the room that seem to lack the ability to take personal responsibility.

So I can't speak to every school district across the country, but I can speak for the one I worked in and there's a (good/bad, you be the judge) reason for that.

In my state the language is explicitly may provide transportation. So that means it's something they take upon themselves. They get money for transportation from the feds/state obviously, but let's all be honest that it's a drop in the bucket to what it should be. And it's not an easy job to coordinate. I don't know the particulars of this system, but the county I worked for had some absolute backwater areas in its district. We're talking thirty minutes up/down mountain roads to the nearest school.

Add onto the funding issues that, like you said, there is a noticeable lack of drivers. They don't get benefits, they get shit pay, AND they have to have a Driver's License endorsement that entitles them to MUCH better opportunities in private sector.

Not that I'm saying any of this applies to this scenario or excuses it, but until you actually get a glimpse into the sausage factory it's really easy to mischaracterize something as complex as insuring a bus for every child who needs it as a simple problem. I'm willing to speak for Transportation Directors across all schoolboards that the overwhelming majority of them are absolutely terrified of this scenario occurring in their district.

Edit: I will add that even though it was a relatively podunk district with some of the most rural locals in my state, the district I worked for did insist that they do house-to-house, meaning none of that 1/2 mile - 1 mile stops. And they elected to do that themselves.

The Tech field does encourage laziness in certain specializations. Networking is notorious for it because once it's up and configured properly you should be able to sit back and relax. For the most part it will run itself when set up correctly. And you pay for that downtime by not getting paid as much.

CyberSecurity is absolutely booming right now, and those dudes are making a mint. Why? Cause they're going to run around like beheaded chickens more times than not with the pace that attacks are happening. What's that do for their salary? Shoots it through the roof.

Just because your job is business critical doesn't mean you deserve as much as someone else who's doing business critical work. How much work are you doing to maintain the business is the real question, and like I said above, proper Networks should not require tons of intervention. Security solutions, however, do.

Worked in Ed-Tech making less than teachers while at the same time seeing that when the network went down so did the majority of teachers' ability to teach. Didn't make me mad that the person with a Masters made more than the person with an A+. Also spoke to a former tech who, in six years, went from making less than I did in the same position to making over $300k a year.

If you want it, it's out there. You want UPS driver pay? You want to put yourself in one of the more dangerous jobs and do physical labor? You want CISO pay? You want to forego intimate relationships and free time? You want Ed-Tech Technician pay? You want to sit in an air conditioned office, answer printer and smart board tickets and goof off for half of every day?

I don't doubt you a bit, but my brother in Christ, you think countless SysAdmins around the globe are doing that!? So maybe stop and think about what's happening in your chair to cause that because there are millions of machines that (from what you're saying) are put through much more strenuous use everyday that don't require yearly reinstalls.

You're a parent, so you know how this is going to work. By the seat of your pants. Medical and Psychiatric needs are beyond your control. I know you say that it's a need but it's simply not one you can provide other than it coming from you directly. It's just not something you can unilaterally do. You can try and get in contact with counselors at their school, but that's about it. So focus on what you can do and that is be there. Harvard released a study about 8 years ago that had the statement that every successful child had ONE invested, stable adult person in their life. Not parent, aunt, uncle, brother, sister, grandparent. Person.

It sounds to me like you're pretty dedicated to being that person. So I'd say the best thing you can do now is to just be you, and don't stress about the things beyond your control. If you can continue to just be willing to invest this much effort you've shown already then you'll be the best thing going for this child.

This is absolute bullshit! You mean I can't pay money so that I can play the $60 game even less?! How am I supposed to level without 2x XP provided by the Season Pass?! You expect me to just buy DLC and expansion packs for $15+ instead of spending $15+ now and then being able to buy them with a 10% discount for 13.50 each?! That's just not true to my personal experience with over 200 devices from Dell and Lenovo. Especially concerning the not connecting to internet. That is literally the only step you need to take if the OEM install wants to force a MS account to be able to install local accounts. "Nearly impossible" is absolute hyperbole and you know it.

It is absolutely laughable to assume that Chinese researchers wouldn't forge a discovery for financial gain. Millions, if not Billions, have flooded into companies who are even adjacent to cutting edge superconductor manufacturing in just this week since the first news broke of LK-99. They are putting themselves in the running for hundreds of millions of investment dollars. And if they so cared for the process they would submit to a proper peer review before attempting to post "proof" of anything on a TikTok-esque video platform.

It's such a shame. Good trolls are slow burns, and most most importantly they're not personally invested in the topic. Honestly I compare it to comedy. A comic is on stage and points out something about a topic that on its face is comedic but then you stop and think and realize the absurdity of it and that absurdity is why it's comedic in the first place. A good troll is one that starts an argument between people who share beliefs and it should develop in such a way that people can take a step back and realize the absurdity of what they're arguing about. It should result in growth for all the parties and observers involved to realize that they're arguing over stupid meaningless stuff and that there are bigger problems than whatever they've spent who knows how long bickering about.

But it's just developed into snatching low hanging fruit and simply getting a rise out of people by simply saying slurs or bigoted comments.

Listen, I get that Lemmy has a rather unproportionally large user base of Linux users. I like Linux for what it is, I really do. But if you think the job would have been easier by handing users who couldn't operate Windows a Linux laptop you're lost in the sauce. And honestly if you think ChromeOS isn't used in professional settings then you really have no business attempting to suggest a ChromeOS alternative for what is usually the largest Tech Departments, in terms of number of end users, in the majority of Cities and Counties across the U.S.

Unfortunately there isn't an alternative unless you live in a swanky community with a school system that has money thrown at it.

The problem, at this point, is mostly inertial. Google was poised at the right time. Surface SEs are a thing now, but how do you pivot a system that has 5000+ Chromebooks to SEs? Why should you if there is overwhelming support for what you have?

People who use Chromebooks are also really slow and aren't technically savvy at all.

I don't see how you can support that statement at all. It's not like I didn't work tickets for student devices, it just so happens that the overwhelming majority of my tickets that weren't physically damaged Chromebooks were to support faculty devices, which were all Windows.

Why would absolutely anyone on this sub install Home? Microsoft themselves make a multi-edition .iso available on their website. And funnily enough now, Microsoft supports the hosting of massgravel. Should it take as many steps as it does two make a local account? No, but it's literally two extra clicks.

It's literally two clicks to make a local account instead.
